REPORT :

The Premier 1 Minor Semi-final at Woy Woy Oval saw Kariong defeat Warnervale by 33 points to 27. In what proved a see-sawing match, the lead changed several times throughout the 80 minutes and both teams did have their chances of gaining victory. Warnervale started the match very well and did control proceedings in the opening 10 minutes. They were soon rewarded with the opening try, scored in the corner by winger Daniel Ford. After that the match did level out and both teams had their periods of attack. However it was Warnervale who went further ahead with their second try. This try followed a forward surge which saw halfback Josh Holman cross over adjacent to the posts. The conversion of this try had taken Warnervale to a quite handy 12 points to nil lead and everything seemed to be going their way. Warnervale certainly had the better of the play for much of the opening 25 minutes but it was Kariong who surged back into recognition in the final 15 minutes of this half. They attacked consistently midway through the half and an effective backline movement saw fullback Jake Holwill cross in the corner. This was followed soon after by their second try, and suddenly the scores were locked at 12 points apiece. Warnervale did kick a penalty goal just prior to halftime to regain the lead by 15 points to 12. Suddenly the match was anyone’s, and both teams went to the halftime break with much optimism. It was very soon into the second half that Kariong took the lead for the first time in the match when, in the 6th minute, their winger Brandon Shillingsworth went in for the first of his two tries. However their lead of 19 points to 15 was very quickly reversed when Warnervale crossed for their third try. The score was Warnervale 20 Kariong 19 but with still almost 30 minutes to go, it was proving an exciting match for the spectators with both teams trying to make their vital breakthrough. At the 20 minute mark of this second half Kariong took the lead again, when their winger Brandon Shillingsworth picked up a loose ball, against the run of play, and raced 80 metres to score. It was certainly a key turning point in the match. Kariong had jumped to a 26 points to 20 lead which they were able soon able to increase when five-eight Mitch Clay crossed for their fifth try. As a result Kariong had gained a relatively comfortable 33 points to 20 lead with time running out. However Warnervale were not to be denied. They responded with a late converted try and with the score at 33 – 27, the final few minutes were hectic and very intense to say the least. However Kariong were able to hang for a meritorious win and they now proceed to the Preliminary Final in 2 weeks time. Best players for Kariong were five-eight Mitch Clay, who really did step up a notch in the second half, flanker Lachlan Peruch, who was everywhere in attack and defence, and No.8 Blake Silvester. Warnervale had several star performers, but none were better than five-eight Mitchell Johnson, halfback Josh Holman and winger Daniel Ford. Warnervale would be hugely disappointed with the result, but would also be very pleased with their efforts this year.

The Lakes came from behind to defeat Warnervale in Premier 2 when they won the Minor Semi-final by 35 points to 26. Warnervale had the better of the first half and went to the halftime break leading by 19 points to 10. They played very concerted and controlled rugby in the first half. Just when it seemed they had everything under control, it was The Lakes who finished the stronger. The Lakes scored early in the second half and were able to soon take the lead in the match. They were able to outscore Warnervale by 25 points 7 in the second stanza. It was a good win for The Lakes and they continue on to the Preliminary Final. Best for The Lakes were No.8 Zac Christensen and fullback Tom Cleary. Warnervale were best served by flankers Ethan Sant and Mark Fittler, and fullback Sione Tonga.

Avoca Beach were able to win the President’s Cup Minor Semi-final, defeating Terrigal by 27 points to 13. Terrigal had the better of the first half and went to the halftime break leading by 13 points to 8. They were definitely playing the better rugby, but it was at this point in the match that their pointscoring stopped. It was all Avoca Beach in the second half, and they were able to put on 19 points to Terrigal’s nil in the second period. It was definitely a match of two halves. Best for Avoca Beach were fullback Shaun Townsend and five-eight Dylan Hardaker. Terrigal’s best players were five-eight Jono Small and centre Stephen Bright. Avoca Beach will continue in the Finals Series while Terrigal’s season comes to a sudden halt.

In what proved an intense game of rugby Terrigal defeated Woy Woy in the Under 19 Minor Semi-final by 25 points to 14. This proved a quite close encounter throughout although Terrigal, after a slow start, were always that little bit ahead on the scoreboard, Woy Woy led early but when Terrigal took the lead midway through the first half they were never headed. Best for Terrigal were centre Vaughan Kernan, while hooker Daniel King never stopped for his Woy Woy team.

REPORT :

The last round of the Central Coast Rugby Union season has finally settled the composition of the Finals Series for 2017. In what proved a very nerve wracking afternoon of rugby for club officials, the Premier 1 finished up with the following teams making up the Top Four :
1. Terrigal
2. Ourimbah
3. Kariong
4. Warnervale

The crucial match saw Warnervale defeat Ourimbah by 29 points to 26 at Ourimbah Rugby Park. The win by Warnervale saw them gain a position in the Final Series at the expense of Woy Woy who were defeated by Terrigal. Warnervale finished the year like a house on fire and they won their last 4 matches to sneak into the Top Four. They also started this match yesterday extremely well and took control right from the very start. They played excellent rugby and before long were leading by 19 points to nil. Ourimbah had no answer to this early onslaught. Warnervale had come to the contest with a mission and they were putting the vital points on the board. By halftime Ourimbah had come back into the match a little with their own converted try, but it was Warnervale who went to the halftime break leading by 19 points to 7. Both teams knew the match was far from over. The second half was a real arm wrestle. Ourimbah outscored the visitors in the second half but the Warnervale team was able to hang on for victory. Warnervale led by 22 points to 19 midway through the second half and the match was certainly very much up for grabs. Warnervale then scored to lead by 29-19, but it was Ourimbah who were finishing the stronger. Ourimbah did score a try right on fulltime, but Warnervale were able to hang on for victory. Best players for Warnervale were hooker Dean Crofsky, halfback Josh Holman, and centre Jack Hogan. Best for Ourimbah were lock Steven Pike and centre Owen Turner. It was a great moment for the Warnervale club, and made even better for them when they became aware of the scores from the other grounds. Warnervale will play Kariong in next week’s Minor Semifinal.

Terrigal finished the 2017 regular season undefeated when they defeated Woy Woy by 42 points to 20 at The Haven Oval. The loss by Woy Woy saw them drop out of the Final Series to that club’s huge disappointment. The loss allowed Warnervale to take their place. The first half at The Haven was a quite an even battle and in fact there was nothing between the two teams. Terrigal led by 12 points to 7 late in the first half and with a try right on halftime were able to go to the break leading by 19 points to 7. It was a handy lead at that stage. The second half saw Terrigal continue in the same vein and were able to score a further 21 points in the second half. Woy Woy were able to respond with their own 13 points in that second half but it was not to be enough. Terrigal go into the Finals full of confidence and will play in the Major Semi-final in 2 weeks time against Ourimbah. Best players for Terrigal were halfback Sekope Maea, and locks Joe Taylor and Josh Vainikolo. Woy Woy never gave up and were best served by halfback Mitch Hyde, lock Kane Burns and prop Tyrone Fleming.

Kariong confirmed their Finals berth with a comfortable 32 points to 10 win over Gosford at Kariong Oval. Kariong had the win secure at the halfway mark when they led by 27 points to 0 at the break. Kariong had already done enough to cement their semi-final spot by that time. Gosford did outscore Kariong in the second half but it was all too late for the visitors. Kariong were best served by No.8 Blake Silvester, flanker Josh Bottero, who crossed for 2 tries, and five-eight Mitch Clay. Best for the visitors were back Josh McGlynn and flanker Hugo Pike.

Avoca Beach finished the season strongly with an easy 46 points to 12 win over The Lakes at Slade Park. The first half was a very even affair and the visitors only went to the break leading by 12 points to 5. However the second half was all Avoca Beach and they were able to pile on a further 34 points. Avoca Beach had several very good players but none were more effective than prop Luke Sheridan and centre Chris Newton. The Lakes had several good players, and these were headed by prop Michael Ferry and lock Anthony McGuiness.

The Entrance completed their season in the President’s Cup at Joseph Banks Oval with a hard fought 12 points to nil win over Hornsby.

REPORT :
Results in the Central Coast Rugby Union competition yesterday did not yet determine which teams will be making up the Top Four this year. It all comes down to the final round next Saturday.

The Match of the Day saw Terrigal prove to be far too good for Kariong at The Haven Oval. They ran out winners by 45 points to 5. Terrigal were immediately on top in this match and they had crossed for two tries within the opening few minutes. Terrigal were to continue this dominance throughout, and Kariong simply had no answer to the onslaught for the rest of the match. Terrigal went to the halftime break leading by 24 points to nil and even at that stage the end result seemed inevitable. Terrigal were controlling proceedings right across the field and were continually looking dangerous. Terrigal had several very good players. Flanker Sam Kenny was outstanding, especially in the first half, while his fellow flanker Ryan Metcalfe was in his usual great form. Halfback Sekope Maea was also dangerous, and centre Mitchell Hirst had one of his better games this season. It was an excellent all round performance by Terrigal and it simply showed why they are the form team in this competition this year and why they have remained undefeated. They will go into the Finals as Minor Premiers and it will take a very good team to topple them this year. It was not a good day for Kariong. They remain in the Top Four despite the loss but they will need to refocus very quickly if they are to keep that spot and if they are to be a force in the Finals. Their best performers on the day were lock Taylor Mildren, while the brothers, fullback Jake Holwill and prop Cory Holwill, never stopped trying despite the situation. Kariong know they need to win next Saturday to ensure their spot in the Top Four.

Ourimbah defeated Woy Woy by 23 points to 20 at Woy Woy Oval. It was a hard fought and tightly contested encounter throughout. There was never too much between the two teams and both had their periods where they led in the match. Ourimbah had slightly the better of the first half and went to the halftime break leading by 15 points to 10 but the result was still certainly up for grabs at the halfway point. Ourimbah had several very good players at this stage. Flanker Jarrod Grange was outstanding and was having one of his best matches this season. Hooker Clint Guyatt and prop Jordan Clark were also strong, while fullback Caleb Pritchard was continually showing pace and the ability to break the line. Woy Woy were suddenly back in the match straight after halftime when they crossed for a converted try to take the lead by 17 points 15. It was certainly to be a classic game of rugby with so much at stake. Woy Woy were playing some very constructive rugby and did have further chances to score further points. Best players for them were back Fokolulu Taumololo, prop Matt Graham, Kane Burns and Mitch Hyde. However the final stages of the match saw Ourimbah cross for their third try and this, with a penalty goal, were able to seal the victory. Ourimbah halfback Matt King was excellent as well and was rewarded with two tries. It was certainly a close match and the result could have gone either way. The wins sees Ourimbah into the Major Semi-final in 3 weeks time, while Woy Woy remain in the Top Four. It all comes down to next Saturday for Woy Woy.

Warnervale maintained their excellent late season form with a very good win over Hornsby. They won by 45 points to 14 at Woongarrah Oval. It was a critical victory for Warnervale and one that sees them one point outside the Top Four. They are so close to the Finals. Warnervale were able to control the match from start to finish. They led by 26 points to 7 at the halftime break and they were able to continue on with it for the final 40 minutes. They crossed for 7 tries to 2 and that was a very good indication of the flow of the match. The Warnervale backline was good and basically most of the backs were able to cross for a try. Best for Warnervale were five-eight Mitchell Johnston, who posted a personal tally of 15 points, halfback Josh Holman, and prop Simi Teekafa. Hornsby tried hard but it was not to be their day. It was their final match of the season and they would have hoped to have finished up with a closer result. But it has been a good year for the Hornsby Lions.

Gosford gained their first win in many weeks when they defeated The Lakes by 34 points to 21 at Gosford Showground. However they certainly did not have it all their own way. They never really got away from The Lakes on the scoreboard until the final stages of the match. It was certainly a helter skelter type of match with tries being scored from all over the field. Both teams were able to throw the ball around and it certainly made for an exciting game of rugby even though there was a lack of constructive play at many stages. Gosford led by only 17 points to 14 at the halftime break and both teams knew they had a chance of victory. Best players for Gosford were lock Chad Sneyd and winger Drew Neist, while best performers for The Lakes were centres Semisi Saitadra and Chris Brady.

Avoca Beach defeated The Entrance in the President’s Cup match at Heazlett Park Oval by 40 points to 5.

REPORT :

Central Coast Rugby Union saw some exciting games of rugby in Round 16 and things are certainly hotting up as we approach the Finals Series. Three of the matches yesterday saw the halftime leaders being chased down and defeated by fulltime.

The Match of the Day saw a classic encounter at Ourimbah Rugby Park where Terrigal came from behind to defeat Ourimbah by 31 points to 20. The two leading teams put on a great display of rugby and both teams will take a huge amount out of this clash. Ourimbah started well and took the lead during the first half. By halftime they had jumped to a small but handy lead of 17 points to 12. Both teams knew at that stage that victory was certainly possible. Both teams then crossed for tries early on in the second half, but it was Ourimbah who maintained their lead in the match, right through until the final 10 minutes of the match. Both teams had some outstanding players on the day. Ourimbah were best served by lock Steven Pike, No.8 Sam Kearney and winger Oliver Dark. These three players were making inroads all day. Terrigal were never far behind on the scoreboard and were continually threatening to take the lead. Their best players on the day were lock Phil Heard, flanker Sam Kenny and winger Pat Niurua, who was dangerous every time he touched the ball. With time running out, and Ourimbah leading by 20 points to 17, it seemed the home team would hang on for victory. However Terrigal was able to cross for two converted tries in the final few moments of the match and were able to maintain their undefeated record this season. It was an incredible end to the match and just when it seemed that this undefeated record was to be broken, they were able to get those necessary points to get the win. Terrigal did score 5 tries to 2 on the day, but this match could have gone either way. It all makes for a very interesting game of rugby if these two teams meet again later in the season.

Another wonderful game of rugby was witnessed at Heazlett Park when Warnervale also came from behind to defeat Avoca Beach by 39 points to 26. The first half was a very even affair with both teams able to make continual inroads into the opposition. This made for an exciting game of rugby for those at the ground. Avoca Beach led early but a late in the half made the score close at 12-10. Avoca Beach did score a converted try right on halftime to make the score 19 points to 10 at the break and things were certainly in their favour at their stage. However, Warnervale started the second half well and were able to cross for an early try at that stage in the second period. However Avoca Beach regained the lead with a great try from the back of a very good scrum. At that stage the home side led by 26 points to 17 and the flow of the match appeared to be going their way at the midway point of the second half. However the last 20 minutes saw Warnervale play some outstanding team rugby and in that period were able to cross for three unanswered tries. Avoca Beach tried to stop this attack but to no avail. Best players for Warnervale were half back Josh Holman, who was involved in everything, five-eight Mitch Johnson, hooker Cameron McNamara, who posted a personal tally of 19 points, and locks Richie Houston and Kevin McNamara. Avoca Beach were definitely in this match for much of it but had no answer in that final period. Best for the home side were No.8 Chad Martin, centre Matt Anderson, and winger Pat Wheatley. The win sees Warnervale still in the struggle to make the Finals, whole Avoca Beach’s chances have now been extinguished.

Woy Woy scored a win right on fulltime when they defeated Hornsby by 38 points to 31 at Mark Taylor Oval. It was a vital win as Warnervale are close behind them on the scoreboard and chasing hard. Hornsby had a wonderful first half and were rewarded with a 21 points to 12 halftime lead. It seemed that this week they may hang on for victory. It was a comfortable lead but it wasn’t to be enough. Woy Woy fought back well in the second half and actually took the lead late in the match. Hornsby scored just after to level the scores at 31 points apiece. Just when it seemed a draw was on the cards, the Woy Woy team was able to cross for a converted try right on the full time whistle. It proved a thriller from start to finish. Hornsby will see the match as one that got away, while Woy Woy would be relieved to get the points with two tough matches for them to finish the season. Best players for Woy Woy were prop Sam Soane, hooker Nick Garnett, while Matt Graham, Kane Burns and Alex Moore all put in very effective performances. Hornsby had some great players on the day but none were better than halfback Ben Astley, Harry Fox and Mitch Fullager.

Kariong were far too good for The Lakes at Kariong Oval and ran out winners by 103 points to 0. It was Kariong on top all day and were able to cross for 15 unanswered tries. It was 61 nil at halftime and the match continued in the same vein in the second half. Best for Kariong were wingers Dan Shillingsworth and Ricky Chapman, as well as flankers Josh Bottero and Lachlan Peruch. The Lakes were best served by Wiremu Pirini, Michael Ferry, and Harry Pirini.

Gosford defeated The Entrance in the President’s Cup match at Joseph Banks Oval by 12 points to 0.
