REPORT :

As the season heads to the Finals, matches in Central Coast Rugby Union are certainly heating up. There were some quite interesting results in matches played yesterday.

The Match of the Day at Gosford Showground saw Gosford defeat Avoca Beach by 22 points to 13. It was a quite even affair throughout with neither team feeling secure at any time in terms of winning the match. Avoca Beach played some pleasing rugby in the first half and they went to the halftime break leading by 8 points to 5. The match was anybody’s at that stage. Both teams had crossed for the lone try each and both teams were finding it difficult to make inroads into the opposition defence. However it was Gosford who gained the upper hand in the second stanza and they were able to score 3 tries to one in that final 40 minutes. Best performances for the home team were put in by Ryan Conaghan, Mitch Cornwell and Vince Stewart. Best for Avoca Beach were Blake Jacob, Shaun Townsend and Mitch Jacob. The win sees Gosford cement third spot on the competition ladder while Avoca Beach are now equal fourth with The Lakes. It all makes for an intense struggle between Avoca Beach and The Lakes in the race for the Finals.

Kariong caused a minor upset when they defeated The Lakes by 36 points to 28 at Slade Park. It was an important match for The Lakes who needed the win to get back into the Top Four. However it was not to be. Kariong had the better of the first half and were able to go to the halftime break leading by 24 points to 14. It was a very handy lead and one that they were able to hang on to for the remainder of the match. The Lakes fought back well in the second half and with 5 minutes to go in the match the score was Kariong 29, The Lakes 28. It was a dramatic finish. The Lakes missed a penalty goal in the final moments but it was Kariong who secured the win with a converted try right at the end of the contest. Best players for Kariong were Justin Walker, Ryan Wallbank, Jackson Beresford and Lachlan Peruch. The best performers for The Lakes were Blake Moroney, Michael Ferry and Logan Hemopo. It was one of Kariong’s best performances this year. For The Lakes, they did secure a bonus point with four tries, so do join Avoca Beach in equal fourth spot on the ladder – this was a small consolation for them.

Ourimbah defeated Warnervale at Ourimbah Rugby Park by 37 points to 36 in a close and intense contest. It was such a narrow win. Warnervale started the match well and scored the first converted try. However for much of the first half the two teams went head to head both on the paddock and on the scoreboard. Warnervale led by 24 points to 15 midway through the first half but Ourimbah slowly got back into the match, and by halftime the Warnervale lead had been narrowed to 24 points to 22. The lead changed several times in the second half. It was certainly proving a nerve wracking contest, both for the players and supporters of both teams. Warnervale were putting on one of their best efforts this season. The Ourimbah scrum was proving completely dominant but Warnervale were overcoming this dominance with some great play in general. Ourimbah snared the victory right on fulltime when they kicked a penalty goal. Ourimbah had maintained their undefeated record this season but Warnervale would consider themselves quite unlucky to lose this match. Best player for Ourimbah was Mavae Muru Teutau who crossed for two tries. The standout player for Warnervale was Ben Butler, and he was well supported by Cameron MacNamara and Dean Crofskey.

Terrigal scored the biggest win of the season when they completely outplayed Woy Woy at The Haven Oval by 133 points to nil. Terrigal crossed for 21 tries in the match and Woy Woy simply had no answer. Jayden Woolley posted 27 personal points in the match, while winger Brent Merritt also crossed for 4 tries. It was a totally controlled performance and Terrigal are in striking great form at the right time of the season.

Women’s 7’s rugby witnessed some interesting match ups on Saturday. Wins to Terrigal, Ourimbah and The Lakes saw these three teams improve their positions on the competition ladder.
