REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union season actually commenced with some excellent games of rugby played across the Coast yesterday. It was so great to see the Swietelsky Premier 1 matches finally get underway, after such a long wet period.

In the Match of the Day at Woongarrah No. 2 Oval, the Razorbacks and The Lakes played out an enthralling and exciting game of rugby. The match ended up in a 33 all draw at the 80 minute mark. After a quite even opening, the match developed into a tough struggle. The scores were locked at 7 points apiece early on and even then, it seemed the match would prove a real battle. Perhaps it was The Lakes who got the better of the first half. In fact, they went to the halftime break leading by 26 points to 14, which was a very handy lead at that stage. However, the Razorbacks were not to be outdone. They fought back and by midway through the second half the scores were locked at 26 point each. Both teams were to score a further converted try to make the final score 33 all. Both teams showed great promise in this clash and showed they will be a force in this year’s competition. Best players for The Lakes were hooker Ben Kaifa, and centres Daniele Cakuseru and Ashton Hutchinson-Walters. Best performers for the Razorbacks were halfback Jarrod Grange, winger Charles Bose, and five-eight Sam Kearney.

Kariong travelled to Heazlett Park to meet Avoca Beach in what proved a most interesting match. This match was the first to be played under lights at Heazlett Park and it proved a great occasion for all concerned. There was nothing in the first half between the two teams. The match was proving a hard-fought struggle. Kariong led by 7 points to 5 at the half time break so the match was very much up for grabs in the second stanza. The first half saw both teams score a lone try each. Although Avoca Beach were unable to score any further tries in the second half, they were able to go on and win the match. This was mainly due to the great goal kicking of Sam Evans who converted four penalty goals in the second half to secure the victory. Kariong did score a try but it was not enough on the day. Like the match described above, these two teams will threaten the competition all year. Best players for Avoca Beach were lock Jake McPhie, halfback Mitch MaGrath and tryscorer and fullback Jono Hirst, while for Kariong the best efforts were put in by lock Nic Outram, No.8 Logan Campbell and centre Josh McGlynn.

Woongarrah Oval No. 1 saw a one sided battle in which Warnervale recorded a 53 points to nil victory over Woy Woy. That score line alone indicated the progress of the match. Warnervale took control early in this match and never looked back. They controlled proceedings from start to finish and gave Woy Woy little scope to get back into the match. Warnervale went to the halftime break leading by 22 points to nil so the match was very much in their control even then. They continued in the same vein in the second half and were able to post a further 31 points in the final 40 minutes. Best players for Warnervale were flanker Kye Haslam, centre Sevanaia Nabetelevu and prop Nick Martschenko. Woy Woy gave it their all but just were unable to compete on the day. They will build on this result.

Hornsby proved too strong for Gosford at Ettalong Oval, and ran out winners by 38 points to 13. This match was moved from Gosford Showground due to the very wet condition of the Showground venue. It was great to see Gosford back in Premier 1 after what has been a most difficult few years where last year, they were unable to enter a team. But it all came good yesterday when they made a greatly welcomed return. However, they were unable to match Hornsby on the day who proved too strong as the match went on. Gosford opened up the scoring and led by 6 points to nil with 2 penalty goals. However, it was not too long before Hornby crossed for their first try and then continued to take further control in the match. Hornsby had jumped to a handy 24 points to 6 at the half time break. The second half was a far more even affair but it was Hornsby who had gained the victory. Best for Hornsby were prop Aisea Tukipili, lock Wes Faupola and flanker Ivanho Satuala. Gosford were best served by five-eight Ben Shelley, who scored all 13 points, centre Tevita Vaenuku and lock Mitch Cornwell.

On Friday night, The Bay lost their President’s Cup clash with Terrigal Blue by 26 points to 14, in what proved a tough tussle throughout.

Women’s 10’s rugby continued with three excellent matches. Wins were recorded by The Lakes, Avoca Beach and Terrigal.
