REPORT :

The Central Coast Rugby Union competition witnessed some quite gripping games of rugby on Saturday afternoon and evening.

The Match of the Day between Gosford and The Lakes at Gosford Showground resulted in a win to Gosford by 28 points to 5. Gosford took control of this match very early on and were never headed. In fact for much of the first half Gosford was camped on The Lakes’ territory and The Lakes were finding it quite impossible to get out of that area. Gosford were playing some very effective rugby and were not allowing the visitors any leeway in this first half. Gosford went to the halftime break leading by 21 points to nil and these three tries had certainly put the home team on the road to victory. It was only later in the first 40 minutes that The Lakes were able to gain some territory and look a little dangerous. The second half was a far more even affair with both teams having their chances of posting points. However because of that first half lead Gosford never seemed to get challenged on the paddock and on the scoreboard. They crossed for their fourth try midway through the half and this lead of 28 points to nil saw them gain the victory. The Lakes did cross for a try right on fulltime but the match was well and truly all over by then. Gosford confirmed their third position on the competition table while the loss by The Lakes sees them drop out of the Top Four. Best players for Gosford were centre Josh McGlynn, flanker Sean Anlezark, while Jackson Steinbeck was rewarded with two very good tries. It was just not The Lakes’ day although their players gave their best. Best for the visitors were halfback Logan Hemopo, while Eddie Vuniwawa scored his team’s only points.

The night game saw Terrigal record a 26 points to 7 win over Kariong at The Haven Oval. In front of a pleasing crowd the match proved a tight struggle throughout although Terrigal were always ahead on the scoreboard. Terrigal opened up the scoring early in the match and by the midway point of the first half already had a lead of 12 points to nil after they had crossed for two very good tries. It seemed at that stage that the home team may take complete control in the match. However much of the remainder of the first half, and of the match, proved a real arm wrestle. Both teams were playing some pleasing rugby and Kariong were definitely putting on one of their best displays for the season. Kariong got themselves back in the match when their centre Brent Bovis crossed adjacent to the posts for a converted try which reduced the Terrigal lead to 12 points to 7. However just prior to halftime Terrigal went further ahead when they crossed for a third try to lead by 19 points to 7 at the halftime break. The second half was a very dour battle. Both teams gave it their all. Both teams had chances to score but some dropped passes at key times did prevent further point scoring. In fact there was only the lone try in the final 40 minutes and that was to Terrigal and that try did cement the victory for the home side. The score line of 28 points to 7 was enough for the home side to hang on for victory. Best players for Terrigal were prop Nathan Simpson, flankers Sam Kenny and Ethan McInnes, and halfback Sekope Maea. No. 8 Phil Brown, flankers Lachlan Peruch and Josh Bottero, and centre Brent Bovis put in the best performances for Kariong. The win sees Terrigal remain in second spot on the competition ladder while Kariong must win many games from now on if they are to make the Final Four this year. Both teams would be pleased with their efforts last night.

Ourimbah continued on their winning ways with a very comfortable win over Hornsby at Woongarrah Oval by 62 points to 7. It was basically one way traffic for most of the match. Ourimbah jumped to the lead very early in the match and were never to be headed for the entire 80 minutes. Ourimbah led by 33 points to nil at the halftime break and then went on to record a further 29 points in the second stanza. Ourimbah stay at the top of the competition table and also maintain their undefeated record for this season. The best players for Ourimbah were winger Daniel Ford, back Tyron Davis and half back Josh Holman. It was not one of Hornsby’s better days but the players never faltered in trying to get into the match. Best players for them were Sam White and their try scoring back Leone Naisaorotaboa            .

Avoca Beach returned to the winners list with a 26 points to 16 win over Woy Woy at Heazlett Park. This contest was a quite even affair throughout and both teams could have won on the day. Woy Woy went to the halftime break leading in this match by 13 points to 10 so it was any body’s match at that stage. Avoca Beach did score three tries to two in the encounter so that fact alone probably shows that Avoca Beach deserved to win on the day but also showed the closeness of the struggle. There were missed opportunities for both teams on the day. Avoca Beach, with the win, however return to the Top Four and would be most pleased with that.  Woy Woy played well and may consider themselves a little unlucky but it seems that is how their season is unfolding. Best players for Avoca Beach were young winger Alex Halls, No.8 Fion Henderson-Foley and Mitch Jacob. Shaun Townsend, on his return to the club, also played well and posted 11 individual points. Woy Woy were best served by locks Edward Kelly and Kane Burns, and prop Tyrone Fleming had one of his best games this season.

Women’s 7’s rugby saw wins to Terrigal, Hornsby and Avoca Beach in what proved an exciting round of women’s rugby across the Central Coast.

REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union competition continued yesterday with some enthralling results. There were some lopsided results but also some very close tussles.

The Match of the Day between Ourimbah and The Lakes at Ourimbah Rugby Park saw Ourimbah continue on their winning ways and the home side ran out winners by 39 points to 12. Early in the match Ourimbah did not have it all their own way. The first half was a tight struggle but it was Ourimbah who took the early lead. They had jumped to a 12 points to nil lead in the first half and things looked ominous for The Lakes. However they put in a most dogged performance and put themselves right back into the match with a try later in the half. Ourimbah went to the halftime break leading by 12 points to 7. The match was then still very much there for the taking. However Ourimbah continued their great second half form. They proved too strong in that final 40 minutes and were able to post 27 further points in that period. The Lakes gave it their all. In fact The Lakes were very much in the match until midway through the second half before Ourimbah took control and stormed ahead both on the scoreboard and on the paddock. The Ourimbah scrum was the dominant feature of the match. Best players for Ourimbah were winger Daniel Ford, who crossed for 4 tries, flanker Jack Sheehan and Jarrod Grange. The Lakes had several very good performers. These included prop Dan Aliifaalago, halfback Logan Hemopo, No.8 Blake Moroney and winger Noah Hallipalli. Ourimbah confirmed their lead at the top of the competition ladder while The Lakes, despite the loss, hang on to fourth position.

Terrigal defeated Hornsby at Woongarrah Oval No.2 in what turned out to be such a high scoring match. The final score in Terrigal’s favour, 62 points to 37, saw a total of 99 points scored in the match, however it was not until the final period of the match that the result was cemented. The first half saw Hornsby get away to a flyer. It was not long after the kickoff before Hornsby had crossed for 3 tries and were leading by 17 points to nil. It was such a great start for them. Gradually Terrigal hit back and by halftime had taken the lead by a narrow 24 points to 23. It was proving to be such a tightly fought game of rugby. It was high scoring match but one that was so close for the first 65 minutes. Hornsby scored early in the second half to take the lead again and a possible upset was on the cards. Hornsby took three intercepts in the match and these length of the field tries were certainly proving exciting for the spectators. Much of the second half was close however Terrigal was able to post several late tries to jump ahead on the scoreboard. The end result of 62-37 seemed an easy win but it was not. Terrigal did finish the stronger and were able to take control in that final period. Best players for Terrigal were Ethan McInnes, who crossed for 3 tries, fullback Jayden Woolley, who posted an individual tally of 22 points, and back Frankie Webber. Hornsby played well and were right in the match for much of 80 minutes. Best players for them were winger Harry Fox, fullback Mitch Fullager and five-eight Sam White.

Warnervale defeated Avoca Beach in a nail biter at Woongarrah Oval No.1 by 27 points to 22. Avoca Beach had the slightly better of the first half and led at the halftime break by 8 points to 3. Avoca Beach continued to have the better of play early in the second half and increased their lead early in this half. It all seemed to going quite well for the visitors however the home side suddenly began to put things together. Some good play saw Warnervale storm home and take the lead and the match. Warnervale scored 4 tries to 3 in the 80 minutes and that fact alone showed the closeness of the result. The game could have gone either way but some good play by Warnervale in the final stages of the match saw them grab the victory. The win keeps Warnervale’s slim hopes of a Finals berth alive but they must win nearly all their remaining fixtures from now on. But besides that, the club would be most happy with this result. Best players for Warnervale were back Jacob Griffin, Sione Tonga and Dean Crofsky. Avoca Beach was best served by Mitch Jacob, newcomer to Premier 1 Alex Halls, hooker Fion Henderson-Foley, and Blake Jacob. Avoca Beach remains in fifth spot but will need to get those vital wins soon if they are to return to the Top Four.

Gosford convincingly defeated Woy Woy at Woy Woy Oval to the tune of 51 points to 15. It was totally Gosford’s match and they controlled things from the start to the finish. Woy Woy were never in the first 40 minutes and Gosford almost ran at random during that period. By halftime Gosford had jumped to match winning 31 points to nil lead and the match was all but over even at that stage. The match continued in much the same vein early in the second half. Woy Woy did get going a little in the second half when they crossed for 2 tries but it was all too late. Gosford ran in 8 tries to the home team’s 2 to emphatically record an important win for them. Gosford remain in third spot on the competition ladder. Woy Woy would be most disappointed with their performance after such a great effort last Saturday against Kariong. Best players for Gosford were winger Michael Jones, flanker Sean Anzelark, lock Alex Corcoran and centre Josh McGlynn. Best for the home team were five-eight Damon Boxswell and halfback Zac Doak-Stride.

Kariong secured a tight win in President’s Cup when they defeated The Entrance by 19 points to 12 at Kariong Oval. This was a hard fought clash from start to finish.

Women’s 7’s rugby saw several hard fought clashes yesterday. Wins to Terrigal, The Lakes and Avoca Beach resulted in some exciting women’s rugby across the Central Coast.

REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union competition resumed yesterday after the break for the NSW Country Championships. This round also marks the completion of the halfway mark of the season. The competition table sees a clear Top Four but with several teams looming just behind. It all makes for a very interesting second half of the season.

The Match of the Day between Ourimbah and Gosford at Ourimbah Rugby Park saw Ourimbah maintain their undefeated record when they defeated Gosford by 37 points to 17. The first half saw Gosford play the better rugby. They were far more dangerous with the ball and Ourimbah struggled to halt their attack. Adding to Gosford’s control in the first 40 minutes was the fact that the home side were not playing well. Gosford went to the halftime break leading by 10 points to nil. They had scored a converted try and just before the break had kicked a penalty goal to go to the break with the lead. However things changed radically in the final 40 minutes. In fact this period was all Ourimbah. The match had swung around totally. In the second half Ourimbah outscored Gosford to the tune of 37 points to 7. Gosford simply had no answer to this second half onslaught. Best players for Ourimbah were lock Josefa Biu, who crossed for three individual tries, back Tyron Davies, who kicked a tally of 12 points, and winger Daniel Ford. Gosford were best served by flankers Sean Anzelark and Lepani Nabaliwaqa, and centre Lenny Van der Velde. The win sees Ourimbah positioned at the top of the ladder and appear certain of heading to the finals series this year. Gosford are in the current top Four but will need to get quickly back on track as there are teams close behind them on the ladder.

In a see sawing match at The Haven Oval, Terrigal outlasted The Lakes to record a tight 26 points to 21 victory. This match could have gone either way. It was a great spectacle with scores continually changing throughout the 80 minutes. It was an exciting and enthralling match which neither team really deserved to lose. However it was the home team that got the vital win. The Lakes went to the halftime break with a narrow 8 points to 6 lead and things did look promising for the visitors. They had scored the only try of the first half and were playing some inspiring rugby. The play continued in much the same vein in this second half. During the final 40 minutes the lead changed several times and both teams threw everything they had at each other. Both teams scored two tries apiece and this factor alone shows the closeness of the match. Terrigal were able to land a few more penalty goals to Frankie Webber to see them get the win. Best players for Terrigal were backs Frankie Webber and Dylon Calabria, and flanker Ethan McInnes. The Lakes were best served by fullback Macui Raulini, who scored a try, halfback Logan Hemopo, who kicked a total of 11 points, and Ben Kaifa. The win sees Terrigal in second spot on the competition ladder while a vital bonus point sees The Lakes in fourth spot and will be most keen to stay there in the second half of the competition

Woy Woy secured their first win of the season when they held on to defeat Kariong at Kariong oval by 23 points to 20. This was a good game of rugby. Woy Woy had a great start to the match and led by 15 points to 3 early on. They maintained this lead, despite a Kariong comeback, and went to the halftime break leading by 15 points to 10. It was anyone’s game at that stage. Both teams crossed for 3 tries in this match such was the tightness of the clash. An intercept try to Woy Woy midway through the second half was a turning point. At that stage Kariong were clawing their way back into the match, but this try changed the complexion of the half. Best players for Woy Woy were five-eight Damon Boxsell, No.8 Luke Ingold, and lock Jack Dewar. Kariong had several good players but none were better than five-eight Kyle Sabroe, Jai Clack and Adam Peruch. Kariong would regard this match as one that got away. They had their chances to post further points but errors at the wrong time limited their chances. Woy Woy will take a lot from this match and they will trouble all teams in the second half of the season.

Hornsby recorded their second win in a row when they defeated Warnervale by 34 points to 14 at Mark Taylor Oval. Hornsby all but cemented the win with an excellent first half performance. They played the better rugby in that period and went to the halftime break leading by 26 points to 7. They continued in much the same vein in the second stanza to post a further 18 points to a single converted try by Warnervale. Warnervale never stopped trying throughout the clash but could not stop the Hornsby attack. Hornsby scored 5 tries to 2 and that was a fair indicator of the flow of the match. Best players for the home side were Tim Graham-Robinson, who crossed for 2 tries, hooker John King and back Mitch Fullager. Best for Warnervale were Dean Crofskey, who scored a try, Nathan Harrison and Harry Sexton.

Avoca Beach secured a vital win in President’s Cup when they defeated The Entrance by 19 points to 12 at Heazlett Park. This was a hard fought clash from start to finish and the win was not secured until right on fulltime.

Women’s 7’s rugby saw some hard fought clashes over the weekend. Wins to Terrigal, Hornsby and Woy Woy saw these three team secure spots in the Top Four at the halfway point of the season.

REPORT :

The Match of the Day between Ourimbah and Terrigal at Ourimbah Rugby Park certainly lived up to all expectations. In a hugely tight and hard fought encounter Ourimbah held on to win by 17 points to 13. The win sees Ourimbah cement their position at the top of the competition ladder. There was nothing in this match for the entire 80 minutes. It was an intense clash but also at times very stop start. Ourimbah went to the halftime beak leading by the narrow margin of 10 points to 6 so both teams knew they were very much in this match. The physical toll from the match resulted from the hard defensive play of both teams. Both teams had their chances of further scoring but strong and effective defence prevented this. The Ourimbah team, like Terrigal, put in totally whole hearted performances and no player left anything on the paddock. The best of a very good group of players for Ourimbah were flanker Jack Sheean, prop Brett Cunningham and replacement player Viliami Muru-Teutau. Terrigal also played extremely well. Their best players included back Frankie Webber, forward Ethan McInnes and Nathan Simpson up front. But the whole team put in a wonderful effort. Ourimbah did score two tries to one and that alone shows the closeness of the contest. Both teams were only able to post a converted try each in the second half to cancel each other out. Both Ourimbah and Terrigal will take a lot from this match. Ourimbah confirmed their spot at the top of the competition ladder but obviously both teams now know a little more about each other for their future clashes this year, and there will be several.

Hornsby recorded their first win of the season with a meritorious victory over Woy Woy at Mark Taylor Oval, running out winners by 26 points to 14. Hornsby had the better of the first half and went to the halftime break with a well deserved 12 points to nil lead. In fact that was the difference in the match as both teams scored two converted tries in the second half to cancel each other out at 14 points apiece. It was that first half effort that got the home team the win. Best players for Hornsby were No.8 Wes Faupola, back Harry Fox and Sam White, in his 100th First Grade game for the club. The win confirms a steady improvement this season for Hornsby as the team has steadily improved throughout the year. Woy Woy gave it their all for the 80 minutes. They tried everything to bridge the gap in the second half but were unable to do so. Best for Woy Woy were fullback Sunita Fihaki, lock Jack Dewar and winger Blake Arahill. Woy Woy are very close to their first win of the season.

An exciting game at Woongarrah Oval saw The Lakes and Warnervale played out a 24 all draw. In some ways it was probably an appropriate result although neither side would agree on that. The Lakes did score 4 tries to 2, but Warnervale did control large parts of the oval for long periods. It was a good game to watch. Play went from one end of the field to the other and there were many lengthy periods of attack by the backs on both teams. The only problem for both teams at times was the amount of turnovers at vital times. Warnervale had the better of the first half and went to the halftime break leading by 13 points to nil. They actually went further ahead early in the second half with a further penalty goal to hooker Cameron McNamara and they led by 16 points to nil It was then that The Lakes got themselves into action. Very soon the score was 16-12 with still a quarter of the match to go. It all made for a very exciting final 20 minutes. However, despite several tries being scored during that period, the score was locked at 24 all at the 80 minute mark. Best for Warnervale were outside centre Ben Butler, who continues his outstanding form, hooker Cameron McNamara and centre Jacob Griffin. Best for The Lakes were No.8 Chris Hitch, prop Michael Ferry and fullback Macui Raulini. The draw sees The Lakes maintain their spot in the Top four, while Warnervale showed they will trouble all teams for the reminder of the year.

In a dour and hard fought clash at Heazlett Park, Kariong were able to outlast Avoca Beach by 17 points to 13. There was absolutely nothing in this match throughout, and both teams could have secured a win in this match. Avoca Beach went to the halftime break leading by 13 points to 11 and that scoreline alone showed how tight the struggle was in the first 40 minutes. However Avoca Beach were unable to post any further points in the second half while Kariong were able to respond with two penalty goals to take the lead and the win. It was certainly an arm wrestle in that final 40 minutes with both sides struggling to move the scoreboard. In fact only the two penalty goals to Kariong’s Lachlan Peruch were the only advancement on the scoreboard in that period. Best for Kariong were lock Jackson Beresfield, flanker Lachlan Peruch and tryscorer Josh Bottero. The home team were best served by tryscorer and centre Matt Anderson and five eight Mitch Jacob. Both teams are just out of the Top Four and the next few weeks are crucial for their Finals’ aspirations.

The Entrance secured a vital win in President’s Cup when they defeated Gosford by 12 points to 7 at Joseph Banks Oval.

Women’s 7’s rugby saw some exciting clashes over the weekend. With all eight teams in action, there were wins to Terrigal, Avoca Beach, Woy Woy, and an important draw for Hornsby.
