REPORT :

The Central Coast Rugby Union Grand Final at Woy Woy Oval saw Ourimbah win the Premier 1 Premiership when they defeated Terrigal by 21 points to 17. In a match played before a large crowd, Ourimbah added the Premiership to their Minor Premiership.

Played in fine and very warm conditions, with a consistent breeze, both teams commenced the match with a display of very tight rugby in the opening 10 minutes. It was typical Grand Final rugby where no quarter was given or asked for. Very little happened on the scoreboard during this period as both teams were putting each other to the complete test. Both teams did have some opportunity to post points but it was not to be until the 13th minute when Terrigal opened the scoring with a great try to prop Jay Grogan. The try followed up a strong forward surge by the entire Terrigal pack. This 5 nil scoreline remained the status quo on the scoreboard for the majority of the first half. Both teams had periods of attack but neither side was able to get that necessary breakthrough. Both teams were playing very well in what were abnormally warm conditions. Terrigal had the breeze at their backs and they were able to hold the ascendancy for a large part of the middle period of the first half. Terrigal were also getting a good flow of penalties but just could not add to their tally on the scoreboard. The set pieces were very even and if anything, the Terrigal scrum was matching it very well with a strong Ourimbah pack. It was not until the 33rd minute that Ourimbah were able to even things up when they crossed for a try, and then took the lead with the conversion. Their try also resulted from a strong forward surge when their prop Will Fraser crossed adjacent to the posts. The conversion by Jarrod Grange had taken Ourimbah to the lead by 7 points to 5. This remained the score at the halftime break so the Premiership was still very much up for grabs. The first half was certainly an arm wrestle. Both teams had some very strong performers. Ourimbah’s best players were halfback Matt King, who led from the front, and lock Josefa Biu. Others to play well were No.8 Rob Peden, and centres Jarrod Grange and Owen Turner. Terrigal were best served by their NSW Country representative player and five-eight Marc Kotecsky, lock Alex Brewin, halfback Sekope Maea, and fullback Dan Sargeant. Terrigal were straight away on the attack at the start of the second half. They were rewarded with a second try when winger Dyon Williams crossed in the corner in the 8th minute of the second stanza. This try followed an excellent backline movement headed by five-eight Marc Kotecsky. The conversion of this try took Terrigal to a 12 points to 7 lead in the match. The match was proving a very even, hard fought game of rugby – it was typical Grand Final rugby.  Things were starting to get anxious for both teams as they entered the last quarter of the match. It was around the 20 minute mark of the second half that things changed. In the 18th minute, big Ourimbah lock Josefa Biu finished a good backline movement for him to crash over for a converted try. This try took Ourimbah to the lead by 14 points to 12. They quickly followed this try with another, when in the 24th minute, centre Owen Turner scored a spectacular 50 metre try which went through several sets of hands. Suddenly Ourimbah had jumped to a handy 21 points to 12 lead in what had proved such a close contest. They were definitely in the ascendancy at that stage. However Terrigal were not to be denied. They responded with their own try, when in the 31st minute, centre Dylan Calabria crossed for a try wide out. With the scores now at Ourimbah 21 Terrigal 17, the struggle and intensity in the final 10 minutes was there for all to see. No further points were scored but there were chances for both sides. Ourimbah were able to hang on and at the final hooter had secured the Premier 1 Premiership. Both teams had crossed for three tries apiece in the match and this fact alone demonstrated the tightness of the entire Grand Final. It was a great Grand Final. It was a good performance by both teams but it was Ourimbah who were rewarded for being the dominant team in Premier 1 this year. It was their fourth win over Terrigal this year, and they richly deserved the Premiership. Ourimbah were Major Premiers in 2018.

The Lakes defeated Gosford in the Premier 2 Grand Final by 23 points to 20. This encounter was an intense affair from start to finish. The lead in the match chopped and changed right through to the very final stage of the second half. The Lakes got away to the better start, and with a penalty goal and a converted try had jumped to a handy 10 points to nil lead midway through the first half. Gosford got themselves right back into the match before halftime with a converted try, and at the break it was The Lakes leading by 10 points to 7. The start of second half saw Gosford gain the ascendancy, and with a penalty goal and a penalty try, had raced to a 17 points to 10 lead. It was proving such an intense contest and with the hot conditions, both teams were feeling the strain. The Lakes responded with two quick tries, while Gosford kicked a penalty goal, and suddenly the scores were locked at 20 points apiece with time running out. Both teams had some very good performers. Centre Mark Tipple was great for The Lakes, and he crossed for two very good tries. He was supported by strong performances from fullback Alec Herridge and prop Chad Goodhand. Best for Gosford were lock Wes Bull, No.8 Andrew Moseley and flanker Richie Cully. It was The Lakes who kicked a late penalty goal in the final minutes to fullback Alec Herridge to snatch the victory. The win to the The Lakes Premier 2 team capped off a wonderful season for the team from up north

In a match played in quite hot conditions, Ourimbah appeared to be always in control when they won the President’s Cup Grand Final, defeating The Entrance by 20 points to 0. Ourimbah showed too much experience for their rivals and were able to grind The Entrance into defeat. Ourimbah scored four tries to nil in the match and that was an accurate description of the flow of the entire match. Ourimbah posted two tries in each half in what proved a very consistent performance. Best players for Ourimbah were halfback Alex Lucas, No.8 Chris Smith, who crossed for 2 tries, and centre Mark Littlefield. The Entrance had a great season capped off with making the Grand Final. They came from fourth position but just could not get things to go their way on the day. Players such as flanker Joel Laws, five-eight Andrew Danckert and lock Thomas Falconer never stopped all day. The win by Ourimbah completed a very good day for the Ourimbah club with premierships in both Premier 1 and President’s Cup.

Avoca Beach defeated Woy Woy in the Under 19 Grand Final by 23 points to 7. It was an intense, spirited contest in the first half. However it was Avoca Beach who gradually gained control the further the first half progressed. Avoca Beach had jumped to a 10 points to nil lead at the halftime break and everything appeared to be going their way. Woy Woy did respond with their own converted try early in the second half and suddenly things grew more tense with the score 10 – 7 in favour of Avoca Beach. However the further the match went on, the more Avoca Beach gained the momentum. Avoca Beach were able to post 13 points in the final 20 minutes of the second half and this was enough to secure the Premiership. Best for Avoca Beach on the day were fullback Reece Piepers, lock Matt Peebles, halfback Kye Blair and centre Michael Houssenloge. Woy Woy never stopped trying. Their best players were lock Ben Austine and centre Tamani McInnes-Cama. It was the third successive Premiership in this grade for Avoca Beach, who were able to cap off some excellent late season form with this win.

Avoca Beach also won the Women’s 7’s Grand Final when they defeated Minor Premiers Woy Woy by 17 points to 7. Avoca Beach completed a great late season run when they proved too strong for Woy Woy. Avoca Beach went to the halftime break leading by 10 points to nil, and had all but secured the Premiership even at that stage. Avoca Beach crossed for a third try early in the second half and they then led by 17 points to 0. Woy Woy did score a late converted try but it was all too late. Best players for Avoca Beach were Jessie Jensen, Inge Visser and Renee Staben. Woy Woy were best served by Holly Johnstone and Aliyah Rodominski. Avoca Beach had won the first ever Women’s 7’s Premiership in Central Coast rugby after having won last 15’s Premiership in 2002.

REPORT :
The Premier 1 Preliminary Final at Woy Woy Oval saw Terrigal proving too strong for Woy Woy, running out winners by 28 points to 10. In a match played under clearing skies, the first 15 minutes was a quite even struggle. Both teams had periods of ascendancy but then both had to defend vigorously at other times. Woy Woy did open the scoring in the 3rd minute when their winger Alex Moore kicked a penalty goal for Woy Woy to lead by 3 points to nil. However it did not take too long before Terrigal was able to respond. Five-eight Marc Koteczky made an excellent break to score adjacent to the posts. He converted his own try to take Terrigal to the lead by 7 points to 3. He quickly followed this up with a penalty goal and suddenly Terrigal had jumped to a handy 10 points to 3 lead. After what was a relatively even opening stage, it was Terrigal who then controlled much of the play from the 15th to the 30th minutes of the first half. They were on continual attack and putting the Woy Woy team to the test. They were rewarded for their efforts with a further try in the 23rd minute when fullback Dan Sargeant made a decisive run along touch to increase Terrigal’s lead to 15 points to 3. Woy Woy did hit back soon after this try with their only try of the match. An individual effort by fullback Fokolulu Taumololo saw a converted try reduce the Terrigal lead to 15 points to 10. Despite Terrigal doing much of the attacking in the first half the score was still very close and it was still anyone’s match. Terrigal did kick a second penalty goal right on halftime to see them go to the halftime break leading by 18 points to 10. It was a pleasing first half of Finals rugby. Best players for Terrigal were lock Alex Brewin, five eight Marc Koteczky, fullback Dan Sargeant and flanker Ryan Metcalfe. The second half opened with a further penalty goal to Terrigal’s Marc Koteczky and Terrigal had gone to a 21 points to 10 lead. The next 20 minutes saw no action on the scoreboard but plenty on the paddock. It was a physical clash, and some very heavy defence from both sides was witnessed. Everyone felt Woy Woy had to score next if they were to get back into the match. But it did not happen. In fact, in the 22nd minute of the second half Terrigal hooker Ethan McInnes capped off a fine performance with a try that had placed his side in a quite comfortable position, leading by 28 points to 10. There was no further scoring in the match. The remainder of the half was dominated by some good defence. The second half saw Terrigal keep Woy Woy scoreless while they themselves were able to post 10 invaluable points. Woy Woy tried everything to get back into the match, but it was simply not their day. Best for Woy Woy were fullback Fokolulu Taumololo, halfback Mitch Hyde, and flanker Blake Arahill. Terrigal continue on and have a rematch with Ourimbah in next Saturday’s Grand Final – this is replay of last week’s Major Semi-final and that Grand Final will be a hard fought encounter. Woy Woy finish up for the year but despite this loss can be well proud of their efforts this season in reaching the Preliminary Final.

The Lakes defeated Terrigal in Premier 2 when they won the Preliminary Final by 23 points to 16. The match was very even throughout and it did take both teams quite some time to gain any real ascendancy. It was 6 all at halftime with 2 penalty goals each with neither team able to break through for a try. It remained 9 all well into the second half before The Lakes scored 2 quick tries to take a good lead of 23 points to 9. Despite this lead Terrigal fought back hard, and a penalty try to them late in the match certainly made for a close and gripping final few minutes. The Lakes move into the Grand Final and meet Gosford next Saturday. Like the Premier 1 clash, it will be a repeat of the Major Semi-final.

In what proved a most even and dogged match, The Entrance won the President’s Cup Preliminary Final, defeating The Lakes by 24 points to 10. The Entrance got away to a great start with a converted try early on, and then was able to follow this up with a second try before halftime. The halftime lead of 17 points to nil was most handy but certainly not enough to ensure victory. However another try early in the second half, and a 24 points to nil lead well into the match, saw The Entrance secure the win. The Lakes did cross for two late tries but it was all too late for them. The Entrance goes in the Grand Final and will meet Ourimbah next Saturday.

In a display a great Finals rugby, Avoca Beach defeated Warnervale in the Under 19 Preliminary Final by 36 points to 10. It was an exciting match from start to finish and the skill level displayed by both teams was excellent. However Avoca Beach were proving the stronger team and by halftime had jumped to a 11 points to nil lead. They were even more dominant in the second stanza and were able to post a further 25 points in that half. Avoca Beach move into the Grand Final next Saturday and meet Minor Premiers Woy Woy in the big one.

The Women’s 7’s Preliminary Final saw Avoca Beach run out victors over Terrigal by 19 points to 5. A great first half by Avoca Beach saw them pile on 3 tries and 19 points for a match winning lead. Terrigal kept Avoca Beach scoreless in the second half and they also scored their own try on fulltime, but it was all too late for them. Avoca Beach meets Woy Woy in the Grand Final next Saturday in what should be an enthralling match.

REPORT :

Ourimbah defeated Terrigal in the Premier 1 Major Semi-Final at Woy Woy Oval by 42 points to 23. The match saw Ourimbah lead throughout the entire 80 minutes. They always appeared to be in control but Terrigal did stay in contact on the scoreboard for the majority of the match.
Ourimbah got away to a great start and they were over for a try within the opening 2 minutes of the match. Centre Owen Turner raced across for the opening try. This converted try saw Ourimbah leading by 7 points to nil after only a couple of minutes. This was quickly followed up by a penalty goal and this 10 points to nil lead was just the start that Ourimbah had hoped for. The next 20 minutes saw both teams make inroads but to little avail. Play went from one end of the field to the other and both teams had opportunities to score. Terrigal did get back into the match with three penalty goals to fullback Conor Lowndes. With the score at 10-9 at the 25th minute mark both teams knew they were still very much in this contest. Ourimbah were looking the more dangerous at this stage and threatened to score on several occasions. However various errors at the breakdown by Ourimbah saw Terrigal kick these penalty goals to keep them in the match. Around the 30 minute mark, in the 28th and the 34th minutes, Ourimbah surged ahead on the scoreboard. Ourimbah cemented a very handy lead when they scored a great try to No.8 Rob Peden, and then quickly followed it up with their third try to halfback Matt King. Suddenly the score had jumped to 22 points to 9 and the Ourimbah were certainly in the ascendancy at that stage. Terrigal kicked their fourth penalty goal right on halftime to reduce the lead. However the 22 points to 12 lead at the halftime break to Ourimbah saw them well in control. The opening minutes of the second half saw Terrigal convert two penalty goals. This enabled them to reduce the Ourimbah lead to 22 points to 18. Despite the fact that Ourimbah had scored 3 tries to nil, Terrigal were still very much in this match on the scoreboard. A great try to Tyler Jones in the 15th minute of this half saw Ourimbah further their lead to 29 points to 18. This was an excellent team try with some very good support play. Ourimbah had some very good performers in this match. None were better than No.8 Rob Peden, centres Owen Turner and Jarrod Grange, and flankers Craig Thomas and James Blanch. Ourimbah then kicked a penalty goal to lead by 32 points to 18 before Terrigal crossed for their lone try in the match. This try was scored by fullback Conor Lowndes who capped off a great match by scoring all of Terrigal’s 23 points. A wonderful effort. Ourimbah cemented a convincing victory near fulltime when their centre Jarrod Grange crossed for the team’s fifth try. Ourimbah had run out winners by 42 points to 23. Terrigal’s best players included flanker Mike Ozdillii, five-eight Mark Koteczky, and fullback Conor Lowndes. Terrigal will meet Woy Woy in next Saturday’s Preliminary Final. It was a great effort by the Ourimbah side and a well deserved win. Terrigal will go back to the drawing board and work hard this week to prepare for a tough clash against Woy Woy who are coming off a solid Minor Semi-Final win over Kariong.

The Premier 2 Major Semi-Final saw Gosford defeat The Lakes by 15 points to 7. This was an intense, hard fought match throughout. It was a physical clash and neither team would say die. The first half was a very even affair. Gosford were only able to break the nil all deadlock tight on halftime to go to the break leading by 5 points to nil. The Lakes took the lead in the second half through some solid play but it was Gosford who hit back soon after to secure the win. Both teams knew they were in a rugby match with some strong defence by both teams. Gosford head straight to the Grand Final while The Lakes will play Terrigal next Saturday.

The President’s Cup Major Semi-Final saw Ourimbah claim a relatively easy victory when they defeated The Lakes by 29 points to 5.  Ourimbah always appeared to be in control. They went to the halftime break leading by 12 points to nil and then were able to follow this up with a further 17 points in the second stanza. The Lakes did score a try near fulltime but it was all too late. The Lakes will play The Entrance in next Saturday’s Preliminary Final, while Gosford will prepare for the big one in a fortnight’s time.

In a see-sawing encounter, the Under 19’s Major Semi-Final resulted in Woy Woy kicking a penalty goal on fulltime to defeat Avoca Beach by 23 points to 22. Woy Woy had a very good first half and went to a deserved 17 points to 8 lead at the halftime break. Avoca Beach fought back in the second half to enable them to take the lead late in the match. However the penalty goal on fulltime saw Woy Woy snatch the single point win. Woy Woy are into the Grand Final and Avoca Beach will play Warnervale next Saturday.

The Women’s 7’s Major Semi-final was an even struggle from start to finish but it was Minor Premiers Woy Woy who hung on to defeat Terrigal by 10 points to 7. It was an exciting and hectic game of rugby with both teams putting on a pleasing game of 7’s rugby. Woy Woy have reached the Grand Final while Terrigal and Avoca Beach will meet each other next Saturday to see who has the right to go to the Grand Final.
