REPORT :

Terrigal confirmed their position at the top of the competition ladder with a hard fought win over Ourimbah at The Haven Oval, running out winners by 20 points to 18. It was certainly an even battle throughout with both teams having their chances of victory. The early stages of the contest saw both teams having periods of attack and defence. There was plenty of action on the playing field but none on the scoreboard. In fact it was Ourimbah who opened the scoring with a try in the corner in only the 20th minute. This 5 points to nil lead was deserved at this stage as they were playing some good rugby. Terrigal did respond with a penalty goal to make the score 5-3. Ourimbah did have the better of play in the first half and two very quick penalty goals to their five-eighth Rob Richardson saw them jump to a handy 11 points to 3 lead. At this stage things were all going their way. But Terrigal were not to be denied. In the 34th minute Terrigal completed a good team try when their prop Liam Caulfield crossed for a vital try just prior to the break. A sideline conversion by Aaron Tait had reduced the Ourimbah lead to 11 points to 10. This was to be the halftime score and both teams knew it was to be a struggle in the second half. Terrigal took the lead for the first time in the match at just the 2nd minute of the second stanza when they kicked a penalty goal to make the score 13-11. Much of the second half was an arm wrestle but it was Terrigal now who were playing the better rugby. They were rewarded in the 18th minute with a very good try to winger Dan Sargeant. Another excellent conversion from touch by Terrigal five-eight Aaron Tait saw the home side jump to a handy 20 points to 11 lead. However Ourimbah were not to be denied. A wonderful individual try to their halfback Matt King in the 30th minute of the second half, saw the score reduced to 20 points to 18. With time running out there was huge excitement in the final 10 minutes as both teams tries to secure the win. However it was Terrigal who were able to hang on for victory. The win sees them remain undefeated, and at the top of the competition ladder.

Avoca Beach defeated Warnervale at Woongarrah Oval by 16 points to 10. This was such a vital win for the Avoca Beach team and keeps them in touch with the Top Four. The match was an even struggle throughout. There was very little scoring in the opening quarter of the match as both teams attempted to sort each other out in an attempt to gain the ascendancy. However it was Avoca Beach who were able to post the first points. In fact a try and 2 penalty goals saw the visitors go to the halftime break leading by 11 points to nil. It seemed things were going all their way but they knew the home side would come back strongly. In fact Warnervale did outscore Avoca Beach in the second half by 10 points to 5 but the first half had proved costly for them. Both teams put in very good performances and both teams know they can have an effect on all the action at the end of the season. Best players for Avoca Beach were the veteran Emile Thomas, who was strong all day. He was very well supported by his lock partner Elliott Dawkins. Best for Warnervale were Scott Fitzpatrick, who scored a try, and Mitchell Reilly.

Woy Woy were far too strong for Hornsby at Woy Woy Oval, running out victors by 73 points to 19. The early stages of the match saw an even contest but very quickly Woy Woy were able to assert their dominance and the further the match went on the more dominant Woy Woy became. Woy Woy led by 38 points to 5 at the halftime break, and they were able to maintain this same scoring rate in the second half. It was an important win for Woy Woy and keeps them in touch with the competition frontrunners. Best players for Woy Woy were Blake Arahill, who crossed for 3 tries, Mitch Hyde, and Alifeleti Atiola, who also crossed for 2 individual tries. Hornsby would be hugely disappointed with the result after some good performances in recent weeks.

Kariong proved too strong for The Lakes at Slade Park. They continued their very good recent form with a 54 points to 12 win. Kariong were able to run in 10 tries to 2 in what was a good indicator of the flow of the match. The match saw Kariong flankers, Josh Bottero and Lachlan Peruch, both cross for 2 tries apiece, and they certainly made their mark on the match. Others to play well for Kariong were five-eight Mitch Clay, Scott Hanley and Ryan Wallbank. The win sees Kariong jump into second spot on the competition ladder in what has proved a great start to this season for them. The Lakes never stopped, and they were rewarded with 2 good tries to Macui Raulini and Iliesa Cama. These two players certainly made an impact on the match.

In the President’s Cup, Gosford defeated The Entrance by 31 points to 12 at Gosford Showground. The home side played good rugby to secure the win.

REPORT :

After 6 rounds, and with the competition a third of the way through the season, things are beginning to sort themselves out in terms of the competition ladder.

In the Match of the Day, Kariong defeated Ourimbah by 25 points to 19 at Kariong Oval. In what many would regard as a minor upset, Kariong started off strongly and had secured enough points early in the match to be able to hang on for victory. Kariong did start well. They played good rugby and took advantage of some hesitant Ourimbah play. Kariong went to the break leading by 14 points to nil and they deserved that lead. The home side went further ahead early in the second half when they were able to cross for another try. In fact early in the second half they had gone to a match winning lead of 22 points to nil and it all seemed over. It was only then that Ourimbah started to put things together. They were able to cross for three unanswered tries and suddenly the Kariong lead had been reduced to 22 points to 19 and the match was certainly very much up for grabs. However Kariong were able to settle the ship, and with a late penalty goal were able to hang on for victory. It was a wonderful team effort by the Kariong squad and this important win places them in the Top Four. Best players for Kariong were lock Phil Brown, who crossed for 2 tries, five-eight Mitchell Clay, hooker Justin Walker and flanker Lachlan Peruch. Ourimbah, after a disastrous start, came back extremely well and could have taken the match. Best players for them were Clint Guyatt and Jarrod Grange. It was an enthralling game of rugby and does show that any of the top teams can win on the day.

Avoca Beach returned to the winner’s circle with a hard fought 21 points to 10 victory over Woy Woy at Heazlett Park. This match was tight throughout but Avoca Beach were able to lead for much of the match and were able to record a significant win. Woy Woy opened the scoring with an early penalty goal, but it was then that the home side who were able to respond with 14 unanswered points in the remainder of the first half. Avoca Beach went to the halftime break leading by 14 points to 3. Best players for Avoca Beach were No.8 Chad Martin, while Blake Jacob continued his great recent form. Woy Woy scored early in the second half, and with the match score at Avoca Beach 14 Woy Woy 10 the match was there to be taken. It was a struggle in the second period and both teams had their chances to get the win. However a converted try to Avoca Beach sealed the victory for them. The second half was all square at 7 points apiece but the first half performance by the home side had got them the win. Woy Woy had several very good players but none were better than Nick Garnett, Lapana Vitale, who scored their try, and Damien Fleming. These two teams are just out of the Top Four and the next few weeks will be most crucial for them both in terms of the Finals Series.

Warnervale hung on for a tight win over Gosford at Gosford Showground, running out winners by 21 points to 19. In a match which saw both teams make numerous errors, the result was only secured on the fulltime whistle. It was an entertaining match to watch because of the various changes in possession but neither team would be happy with their overall performance. The match was close throughout. Warnervale went to the halftime break leading by 14 points to 12 and both teams knew victory was possible. This remained the score for most of the second period but when Warnervale scored a converted try late in the match, and led by 21 points to 12, it seemed to be all over. However Gosford stormed home, scoring a converted try and then missing a penalty shot at goal right on fulltime, which would have snatched the home side the win. Best for Warnervale were centre Mitchell Johnson, who ran strongly all day and crossed for 2 tries, lock Mark Fittler, and flanker Ethan Sant. Best for Gosford were flankers Hugo Pike and Joel Wagner, while back Josh McGlynn was always dangerous with the ball in hand. The win sees Warnervale confirm their Top Four spot while Gosford need to secure a change in fortune soon if they are to threaten the Finals this year.

Terrigal continued their free flowing form with a good win over Hornsby by 61 points to 17 at Mark Taylor Oval. Terrigal led by 26 points to 12 at the halftime break but the further the match went on the better they played. The match was not all one way traffic as Hornsby showed great speed in the backs and were able to cross for three very good tries. The win sees Terrigal jump to the top of the competition ladder. Best for Terrigal were winger Dan Sargeant, centre Dylan Calabria, halfback Sekope Maea, lock Joe Taylor and five-eight Adam Dankert who scored 26 personal points. Hornsby never stopped trying and were best served by Earl Yandall and Mitch Fullager.

In the President’s Cup, The Entrance recorded a pleasing win over The Lakes at Joseph Banks Oval by 10 points to 0. The home side played good rugby in very wintery conditions on Friday night.

REPORT :

The 2017 Central Coast Rugby season continued on today with some very interesting games of rugby. The 2017 local rugby season is developing and no clear pattern has developed yet in terms of the competition ladder.

The Match of the Day at The Haven Oval was won by Terrigal by 49 points to 0 in what proved a totally dominant performance. They led from the very start and the Avoca Beach team simply had no answers to the onslaught. Terrigal led by 21 points to nil at the halftime break and they were able to go on and double their points tally in the second 40 minutes. Best for Terrigal were hooker Ethan McInnes, who was outstanding, flanker Ryan Metcalfe and Josh Vainikolo. Best players for Avoca Beach were Blake Jacob, Chad Martin, and Pat Wheatley who all never stopped trying. The win sees Terrigal maintain their undefeated record and are stamping themselves as one of the teams to defeat in 2017.

Woy Woy were able to do enough to defeat Gosford at Woy Woy Oval by 35 points to 17. The match started out as a relatively even affair and both teams would have held high hopes of securing the win. But two intercept tries to Woy Woy, and a couple more later, certainly placed the home side in the box seat. Woy Woy led by 21 points to nil at the halftime break. The second half was a much more even affair on the scoreboard but the damage had been done. Best for Woy Woy were Blake Arahill, who scored 2 tries, and Luke Meany. Adam Howe was also good for Gosford and he crossed for 2 individual tries.

Warnervale gained a gritty win over The Lakes at Slade Park, and ran out winners by 29 points to 10. It was only 11 points to 5 to Warnervale at the break and when The Lakes scored early in the second half, and with score then at 11-10, it seemed it was going to be a battle royal. However Warnervale settled to the task and were able to control proceedings in the latter period of the match. Best for Warnervale were Cameron McNamara, Mitchell Riley and Matt Willmott. The Lakes were quite impressive despite the loss and were best served by Pene Raulini who crossed for 2 tries.

Ourimbah continued their great form this season with a storming win over Hornsby at Ourimbah Rugby Park, winning by 40 points to 8. It was a comfortable win for the undefeated home side but they did not have it all their own way. Ourimbah led by 21 points to 3 at the halftime break and had the win secured but Hornsby never gave in and fought it out to the very end. Best for Ourimbah were Tyler Jones and Keegan Evans, while Sam White was impressive for the visitors.

In the President’s Cup, The Entrance recorded a most heartening win over Kariong at Joseph Banks Oval by 33 points to 5. The home side are certainly travelling well and the future does look good for them.a

REPORT :

The 2017 Central Coast Rugby season got back into the swing of things this weekend with some high scoring games of rugby.

The Match of the day at Heazlett Park was won by Ourimbah, 29 points to 10, over the home side, Avoca Beach. Avoca Beach started the match well and scored an early try to go up 7-0 but this was the only time they were ahead on the scoreboard. Once they settled into their rhythm, Ourimbah scored five tries, all of which came about from the pace of their outside backs. It was these players, Jaydn Pearson, Caleb Pritchard and Oliver Dark, who were the difference between the two sides. The forward packs were evenly matched with Avoca dominating most scrums, but they did not have an answer when Ourimbah got the ball to their speedy backs. By half-time Ourimbah had hit the lead by 8 points to 7 and they were never troubled on the scoreboard in the second half. Avoca made too many mistakes and each time, Ourimbah capitalised on these errors, gaining needed field position and posting points. The Jacob connection, Mitch and Blake, both had strong games for Avoca Beach but it was Ourimbah who claimed the bonus point win to jump to the top of the CCRU Pointstable.

At The Haven, Terrigal were far too good for Gosford, claiming a 43 points to 8 win. Terrigal scored seven tries to one which clearly shows they were the better team on the paddock. Frankie Webber ran in three tries from fullback and the centre pairing of Mitch Hirst and Dylan Calabria were solid in both attack and defence for the home side. The first half was a quite even struggle with the home side only going to the halftime break leading by 12 points to 3. At that stage it seemed the match was still up for grabs. However things all went Terrigal’s way in the second half. For Gosford, Mitch Cornwell had his usual strong game scoring a second half try for his side.

Woy Woy claimed their first win of the season, defeating The Lakes 42 points to 24 at Slade Park. The visitors were able to cross for six tries to four in their victory, and they were up by 28 points to 12 at halftime. They continued their try scoring in the second half. The Lakes certainly gave it their all, scoring four tries to keep the scores close, only down 35-24 late in the second half but a try on full-time to Woy Woy sealed their win. Best for the home side was flanker Wiremu Pirini while forwards Matt Graham and Blake Arahill both had great games for the visitors.

Kariong moved into second place on the ladder with a convincing 36 points to 13 win over Hornsby at Kariong Oval. Justin Walker at hooker and flanker Lachlan Peruch both had a great game for the home side, while prop Angus McQueen was strong for Hornsby. Kariong were always in control of the match, up 24 points to 13 as the match went into half-time and finished strongly to claim a bonus point win.

In the President’s Cup, The Entrance travelled to Woongarrah Sports Field and were able to post a big win over Warnervale by 41 points to 5.
