REPORT :

Swietelsky Shield Premier 1 rugby competition continued on Saturday with some interesting results. Once again, because of the results yesterday, the positioning on the Points Table in Premier changed considerably.

In the Match of the Day, Hornsby won a hard fought struggle with The Lakes, running out victors by 26 points to 8 at Slade Park. This match went point for point for much of the contest and it was only in the last quarter of the match that Hornsby was able to grab a reasonable lead that allowed their supporters to relax slightly. Hornsby opened the scoring with a penalty goal to five-eight Sione Ala, but The Lakes were quick to respond with their own penalty goal to halfback Logan Hemopo. The scores remained locked at 3 all for quite awhile before Hornsby kicked a second penalty to lead by 6 points to 3. It was proving a close and very tight struggle. The only other scoring in the first half was a try to The Lakes and this allowed them to take the lead in the match for the first and only time. The Lakes went to the halftime break leading by the narrow margin of 8 points to 6. Hornsby had several excellent performances in that first half but none were better than No.8 James McCarthy, who led from the front and was in everything. He was well supported by flanker Sau Faupola and hooker John King. Standout for The Lakes was Logan Hemopo who scored all the home team’s points with a try and a conversion. The second half continued in much the same vein but it was Hornsby who gradually gained the ascendancy. It was not easy but they were able to post a further 20 points in the second half and at the same time kept The Lakes scoreless. It was a most creditable performance by Hornsby and holds them in good stead for the rest of the season. Both teams know they have a very real chance of making the Finals this year. Hornsby, with this win, sneaks into equal 3rd position while The Lakes are just out of the Top Five.

Terrigal recorded a 62 points to 5 victory over Warnervale on a very cold day at Woongarrah Oval. The opening minutes of the match were very evenly fought but it did not take Terrigal long to start posting points. They had crossed for 2 tries within the first 8 minutes of the kickoff but then they continued to cross for tries at regular intervals for the rest of the first half, and the match. Terrigal went to the halftime break leading by 38 points to nil so the match was basically over already by then. Warnervale never stopped trying however. They had their chances to score points but errors at the wrong time stopped all progress. Despite the score line it was a physical clash but it was Terrigal who had the right form and were playing some of their best rugby of the year. Terrigal scored a further 24 points in the second half to go on to record a big win. The victory puts Terrigal back on top of the competition ladder which is proving a neck and neck race to the Finals. Warnervale‘s best players on the day were centre Richard Ahilelei, flanker Kye Haslam and halfback Brenton Acreman. Best for Terrigal were five-eight Adam Danckert, centre Harry Hughes and flanker Sam Kenny.

Kariong had a very important victory over Woy Woy at Woy Woy Oval, running out winners by 48 points to 19. This was another hard fought encounter for the entire 80 minutes but it was Kariong who were always ahead on the scoreboard. Kariong got away to a great start in the match and were able to cross for several early tries. They had scored 3 tries, and led by 19 points to nil, before Woy Woy were able to post any of their points. It was a slow start by Woy Woy and not one that they wanted. But Kariong did play extremely well in those opening stages of the contest. A further converted try was scored by each team before halftime for Kariong to go the halftime break leading by 26 points to 7. It was a very handy lead for Kariong, one which they maintained for the rest of the match. The second half was a far more even affair but the result had already gone to the visiting team. It was an important victory Kariong after two very close loses in recent weeks. The win places Kariong in second spot on the ladder in what is proving one of their best seasons in years. Woy Woy will continue to threaten this year and will be a danger for all teams for the remainder of the year. Best players for Kariong were No.8 Hudson Browning, lock Blake Silvester and prop Jonah Manuao, while Woy Woy were best served by No.8 Philip Shaw, flanker Jazper Doak-Stride and fullback Marcus Hundt.

The Bay recorded its first win of the season when they defeated the Razorbacks in President’s Cup on Friday night at Joseph Banks Oval. It was a hard fought clash throughout, resulting in the 7-5 win to the home team.

Women’s 10’s rugby saw four highly competitive matches, with all teams aiming to get that vital win so they reach the Finals in 2021. Wins were gained by Terrigal, Gosford/Woy Woy and Hornsby. This competition is certainly hotting up and it seems there is a real race to make the Finals this year. Terrigal and Gosford/Woy Woy proved on Saturday they will be on the scene during the Finals this year.

REPORT :
In what is developing into one of the best seasons in Central Coast Rugby Union, the Swietelsky Premier 1 rugby competition continued on Saturday with four gripping matches across the Coast. It is proving a close, intense and hard fought competition with no team to be taken lightly. On their day all teams are very capable of winning.

The Razorbacks defeated the previously undefeated Terrigal by 28 points to 13 in a classic game of rugby at Ourimbah Rugby Park. The early stages of the match were very evenly fought with both teams crossing for an early try. Both teams then kicked a penalty goal each to make the score at the midway point of the first half Razorbacks 12 Terrigal 10. Both teams were putting the opposing team under pressure. But it was the Razorbacks who were gradually gaining the slight ascendancy. Prior to halftime the home side kicked two further penalty goals to go to the break leading by 18 points to 10. It was proving a very intense battle with both teams desperate for the victory. Best players for the Razorbacks to this point were flanker Jarrod Grange, who was playing well but also kicking those vital goals, fellow flanker Kaituu Kaufana and prop Brett Cunningham. Terrigal were best served by prop Harry Gary, halfback Jye Cornish and five-eight Adam Danckert. The Razorbacks continued to hold the sway in the second half even though there was not too much between the two teams. But it was the home team who crossed for the only try in the second half while at the same time limiting Terrigal to the one penalty goal. The win sees the Razorbacks take the lead in the Premiership race, pushing Terrigal into second spot. It is certainly proving a tight race to the Finals.

The Lakes kicked a penalty goal close to full time to secure a victory over Kariong by 31 points to 29 at Kariong Oval. This was another hard fought and intense encounter for the entire 80 minutes. This was the second loss in a row for Kariong by the barest of margins. Kariong started so strongly and completely dominated the first 40 minutes. They dominated so much that they led by 24 points to nil before The Lakes had even scored. It appeared at that stage the home team would go on with it and take complete control on the scoreboard for the remainder the clash. The Lakes did cross for a try just before halftime to make the score at the break Kariong 26 The Lakes 7. This was to prove a game in two halves. Just as Kariong had dominated the first half, it was The Lakes who controlled proceedings in the second half. The Lakes gradually crossed for tries for the gap on the scoreboard to slowly close. The Lakes actually took the lead very late in the half and led by 28 points to 26. It was then that Kariong scored their only points in this half with a penalty goal, to regain the lead 29-28 close to fulltime. The Lakes were not to be denied however. They kicked a further penalty goal to make the final score 31- 29. Best for The Lakes were halfback Logan Hemopo, who kicked 4 from 4 goals, including 3 from the touchline, and including the penalty goal from 45 metres out to take the lead in the match. Others to play well were prop Tim Poese, hooker Jason Kakato and five-eight Brayden Hutchinson-Walters. Kariong were best served by fullback Jake Hubbard, who crossed for two individual tries, and another steady performance from the experienced halves combination Scott Hanley and Mitch Clay.

Hornsby defeated Woy Woy at Mark Taylor Oval  by 41 points to 26. Hornsby got away to a great start and they led by 19 points to nil before the visitors were able to respond on the scoreboard. Hornsby continued this good form throughout the first half and by half time led by 31 points to 7, and at that stage it seemed to be a match winning lead. The second half was a much more even affair, in fact Woy Woy actually outscored the home team by 19 points to 10 in the second half but that first half had set the pattern for the match. Hornsby did score 7 tries to Woy Woy’s 4 in the match and that is a good indicator of the flow of the match. It was an important victory for Hornsby and it was a result that both teams will take a lot from. Best players for Hornsby were lock Sione Vuna, flanker Tevita Faupola, and halfback Jack Woodrow, while the Doak-Stride boys, Jazper and Zac, were the most valuable for Woy Woy.

Avoca Beach posted a pleasing win over Warnervale at Heazlett Park by 23 points to 13. It was a tough encounter and even though Avoca Beach always seemed to be in control on the scoreboard, they certainly did not have it all their own way. Avoca Beach had the better of the first half and went to the halftime break leading by the handy score line of 18 points to 6. It seemed they may go on with it in the second half but it was not to be. Warnervale actually outscored the home side to the tune of 7 points to 5 in the final 40 minutes but that first half was the difference. It was a most creditable performance by both teams. Avoca Beach got the win they needed after two recent losses, while Warnervale showed they will press all teams this season. Best for Avoca Beach were flanker Blake Jacob, prop Matt Ritchie and hooker Fionn Henderson-Foley. Warnervale had several goods players but none were better than flankers Joel Laws and Kye Haslam, and hooker Corey Stocks.

Woman’s Match Report:    Round 7    22/05/2021
by Bronte Doorn

Avoca Beach              26                 Warnervale Wildcats           17
Terrigal Trojans          54                 Ourimbah Razorbacks        0
The Lakes                   29                 Kariong Wanderers             5
Gosford/Woy Woy     55                 Hornsby Nala’s                    10

The match of the day was played at Heazlett Park with the Sharks battling the Wildcats. The match was a real arm-wrestle, dominated by heavy defence and tight ball running. Warnervale controlled the game early, running lines close the ruck and using their power forwards, Kian Darragh and Georgia Opetaia. But the smaller Avoca tight-five were able to match them and managed better transitions to their back line. Avoca benefitted from the return of Ash “the Flash” Russell, crossing three times for the Sharkies, and she was well supported by some hard, straight running from Priya Lama and Taylah Welsh.  Warnervale often dominated at the breakdown with persistent turnovers coming from the Cats’ Skipper, Dannielle Theron, which led to some broken phase tries from Nicole Hill, Tia Duncan and Terina Haami. However, the second half was dominated by massive hits from both teams, especially from Sharks’ Captain Hannah Stewart and Warnervale front row queen, Allanah Selwyn. Sharks eventually tipped out the Cats 26 -17. If the Cats take anything from this game, is that they are serious contenders for this season, playing some spectacular rugby each round. The captain of the Wildcats, Danielle Theron, summed up the game perfectly, “It was a game you had to witness to believe it”.

The Trojans ventured over the Ridgeway to take on the Razorbacks at the Pigpen. It’s always a tough battle between these two clubs, with the hype of infamous Hate Week creating an electric atmosphere. Terrigal won the toss, electing to receive first. The Ourimbah forwards forced early consecutive errors for the visiting side due to their strong carries down the left side of the paddock. Terrigal bounced back very quick, regrouping effortlessly after some pivotal plays made by Bella Tisch. Ourimbah showed their excellent technical skills in their kicking game. However, it was not meant to be for the Razorback woman, with the Trojans scoring 8 unanswered tries. Elise Connolly showed her mastery by shifting the ball wide to the hungry centres, Sian George and Jess Brooks, making goal kicking duties for Captain, Prue Bright a busy task. It was a shame the game was denied the final 15 minutes of play due to an error in time keeping. It was a greatly contested game, despite the score line of 54-0.

Kariong hosted the Ladies of the Lakes at home for round 7. The Lakes kicked off to start and were able to quickly steal the ball back. It was Lata Kaifa who powered over the Kariong defence to score the first try of the game. Kariong responded back with quick balls and dominate runs down the field, scoring a well-deserved team try. The forwards of The Lakes showed their diversity by taking the ball out wide, Pascal Halaapiapi doing a quick pick and go, scoring the away side’s second try. The score leading into half time was 14-5. Kariong kicked off starting the second half, starting off strong with a tough defensive line and continuous effort. The second half mainly consisted of scrums, the power and strength of the front row made for a tough contest. The Lakes picked up two tries (Bridget and Hayley) in the second half, drawing their lead out. It was a quick tap off a penalty that gave Bridget the ball and she took off, showcasing her palming skills to make it over the line on the buzzer in true, spectacular style. The final score was 29-5. A mammoth team effort from both Kariong and The Lakes made for an excellent contest and fantastic rugby.

Woy Woy/Gosford travelled down the M1 for a spirited clash against Hornsby Nalas. The Nalas knew what was coming from the reputation that surrounds Gosford/Woy Woy; they play hard, fast and fair rugby. It was an entertaining game that highlighted the strong abilities of both sides, particularly in the breakdown where clutch turnovers were made from each team. It was Gosford/Woy Woy that dominated the game, scoring spectacular tries all over the field. The speed and agility of the away side proved too much for the Nalas, with the final score 55-10.

Round 8 will see Gosford/Woy Woy host Kariong at home with the hopes of continuing their hot streak. Terrigal will head to Warnervale to play the Wildcats. In what might be the game of the week, Hornsby will travel down the M1 to play the Ladies of The Lakes at Slade Park and Ourimbah will have a well-deserved rest. Good luck to all teams in round 8.

In the spirit of Volunteer Week, we, involved with women’s rugby, would like to extend a massive thank you to all the people who make our game possible; officials, coaches, and club members. Without you all, there would be no women’s rugby on the Coast, and certainly no reports to write. Thank you.

REPORT :
In another gripping game of Swietelsky Shield Premier 1 rugby, Terrigal defeated Hornsby at The Haven Oval by 22 points to 0. In an intense and physical game of rugby, and one that was played under lights on a quite chilly evening, Terrigal were always in control on the scoreboard. However the game was much closer on the paddock with both teams giving their all throughout the entire 80 minutes. Terrigal took the early lead with a penalty goal, and then quickly followed this up with a converted try to lock Joe Taylor. Terrigal thus led by 10 points to nil early on. However there were no further points scored in the remainder of the first half. The game had developed into a real arm wrestle with both teams having chances to score but wonderful defence by both teams prevented any further scoring occurring. It was proving a hard fought and gripping struggle. Both teams had several pleasing performances. Best for Terrigal were prop Harry Gray, halfback Jye Cornish, flanker Mitch Hirst, and five-eight Adam Danckert. Hornsby were always trying to get on the scoreboard but just could not break through. Best players for Hornsby were No.8 Tevita Faupula, outside centre Ivanho Satuala, and five-eight Sione Ala. Terrigal opened the second stanza with an early try to five-eight Adam Danckert and this 15 points to nil lead remained the score for much of the reminder of the second half. Once again the match was proving a real struggle and it was proving very difficult to post any further points. Terrigal locked in the win with a converted try close to full time to run out victors by 22 points to nil. Terrigal remain undefeated in the competition while Hornsby definitely proved they will be close to the action later in the year.

The Razorbacks scored a try close to full time to secure a victory over Kariong by 31 points to 27 at Ourimbah Rugby Park. This was another hard fought and closely fought encounter for the entire 80 minutes. The scores were close for the entire clash and neither team was able to take a winning break on the other for much of the match. The Razorbacks started the match well and posted the first try to lead 5 nil but it was not long before Kariong took the lead with their own converted try in the 18th minute. Kariong then led by 7 points to 5. The Razorbacks probably played the better rugby in the first half and were dominating territory and possession for long periods. They were rewarded with 2 tries midway through the first half and this enabled them to go to a handy 18 points to 7 lead in the match. This was the biggest lead in the match but it was not to remain so for very long. The Razorbacks did dominate the middle stages of the first half but Kariong marked the start of their resurgence just before halftime when they crossed for their second try. This try made the score 18 points to 14 and this was to remain the halftime score. The second half was even stevens throughout for all of the 40 minutes. Both teams were able to post 13 points in the second half and the 4 points difference at halftime remained the difference at fulltime. Midway through the second half Kariong had taken the lead by 21 points to 18, then the Razorbacks led 23-21, then Kariong 24-23, before the Razorbacks scored a try very close to fulltime to secure the win by 30 points to 24. It was a very exciting game of rugby where both teams threw everything at each other and maybe both teams deserved the win. The pulsating match kept the spectators warm on a very chilly afternoon. Best players for the Razorbacks were winger Eden Sirone, halfback Connor Peden, flanker Jarrod Grange and centre Owen Turner, while best for Kariong were centre Lachlan Peruch, No.8 Mitchell Parker and five-eight Mitch Clay. Both teams will take a lot from this match. The Razorbacks would be pleased to get back into the winners circle while Kariong proved they are Finalist prospects this year.

In what was a minor upset, Woy Woy defeated Avoca Beach by 31 points to 27 at Woy Woy Oval. In what proved a topsy turvy match, Woy Woy was able to outlast the visitors in this contest. Woy Woy got away to a great start and before very long into the match were leading by 12 points to nil. It was just the start they wanted. However for the remainder of the first half, and early into the second half, it was Avoca Beach who did all of the scoring. By halftime Avoca Beach had fought back and had jumped to the lead by 14 points to 12. Many people thought they would go on with it from that point. In fact they did for awhile into the second half. Avoca Beach scored two tries early in the second half and it was not long before they had opened up a handy lead of 24 points to 12. Avoca Beach had scored 24 unanswered points in the match. However Woy Woy was not to be outdone. From the middle stages of the second stanza until the end of the match, Woy Woy stormed home with three tries. They had taken the lead and they remained in front on the scoreboard until the final whistle. It was a very pleasing effort by the home team and one that shows that in this year’s competition, no team can be taken lightly. Best players for Woy Woy on the day were five-eight Vetaia Sinalevu, who posted 11 personal points, No.8 Philip Shaw, and halfback Zac Doak- Stride. Avoca Beach were best served by prop Jake McPhie, who crossed for 2 tries, flankers Blake Jacob and Eden McQueen, and hooker Fion Henderson-Foley.

The Bay lost their President’s Cup clash with The Lakes by 25 points to 3 at Slade Park on Friday evening.

     by Bronte Doorn

Terrigal Trojans             52                       Hornsby Nalas                10
Avoca Beach                  28                       Gosford /Woy Woy                       0

Terrigal hosted the Nalas for a night game this week at The Haven. Last time these teams met at the Haven, Hornsby showed dominance on the edges and handed Terrigal their first loss for the 2020 season. Terrigal was determined not to let history repeat itself as the two teams clashed in front of a large night game crowd. Hornsby received off the kickoff and showed strong runs through the middle of the park. The Terrigal Ladies got off to a strong start, scoring early in the opening minutes of the game. Terrigal continued forward, with assertive carrying from Bronte Kirk-Clark and Shenay Ball extending Terrigal’s lead running in 3 and 4 tries a piece. With the limited possession the Nalas had, they were able to show their skill and speed out wide for a runaway try by Jessica O’Neil, scoring the first of her two tries that game. The score at half time was 30-5. The second half continued along much like the first half did. The continuous defensive efforts put in by the Hornsby Nalas coupled with the limited bench, saw fatigue set in. However, the determination and grit of the visiting side proved vital, gaining possession later in the game with O’Neil scoring an excellent runaway try. Yet it was the work from the Terrigal halves Elise Connolly and Emily Lufe who were playing out of position that sealed the game with their seamless transition into play making positions. Congratulations to all girls who played a well spirited contest. The final score was 52-10

Kariong travelled to Ourimbah to play the Razorbacks for round six. It could have been anyone's game, with Kariong scoring the winning points in the dying seconds of the game. Ourimbah started strong, with Ellie Dark scoring an effortless try, putting them in front. The strength displayed in each forward pack proved for some exciting rugby, building the pressure and turning over some crucial balls. The Ourimbah backline showcased some excellent speed and discipline, resulting in Makayla McCarthy scoring in the corner. The Kariong woman shared the love with Leesa Blackmore, Nicole Masjak, Jessie Bonioni and Laura Mah scoring impressive tries to put the Wanderers in front. However, the best offence is defense and Kariong proved this by turning the ball over 15 metres out from Ourimbah’s try line and scoring an impressive try that sealed the win for the away side. The final score was 20-15.

What was set to be an exciting matchup turned into a week off as Gosford/Woy Woy unfortunately had to forfeit due to other sport commitments. Avoca winning the match by default wasn’t the win they were expecting but one they’ll take, continuing their streak for another week.

Round seven is set to be a thrilling weekend as all four woman’s teams will be taking the field. Hornsby will welcome Gosford/Woy Woy to Mark Taylor Oval, Terrigal will be travelling to the Pig Pen for a game against Ourimbah, Warnervale will play Avoca at Heazlett Park and Kariong will host The Ladies of the Lakes.

REPORT :

In another gripping game of Swietelsky Premier 1 rugby, Terrigal defeated Avoca Beach at Heazlett Park by 34 points to 15. In an intense and physical game of rugby, Terrigal were able to finish the stronger to record the victory. The scores do not indicate the closeness of this contest and it was not until the final quarter of the match that the result was confirmed. Terrigal opened the scoring in the first few minutes of the match when five-eight Adam Danckert kicked a penalty goal. The opening stages of the match were fast and furious with both teams certainly making their mark on the match. Even in the early stages of the match players were certainly taking and giving some big hits with both teams so intent on getting the upper hand. It was not long before Avoca Beach squared the match in the 15th minute with their own penalty goal to make the score 3 all. However very soon after this it was Terrigal who regained the lead. They scored their first try after a brilliant run by Adam Danckert who passed to Frankie Webber to score the converted try. This was followed up soon after by another try when Terrigal posted their second try so suddenly the visitors had jumped to a very handy 17 points to 3 lead and things were looking ominous for the home side. Avoca Beach were not to be outdone however. In the period before halftime Avoca Beach responded with two tries in short succession to reduce the lead to 17 points to 15. This was to be the halftime score so the match was certainly up for grabs at that stage. It was a great first half of rugby, with the intensity there for all to see. Terrigal had several good players. Five-eight Adam Danckert was outstanding, despite taking a heavy knock early in the match. He was well supported by halfback Jye Cornish, and locks Joe Taylor and Will McDonald. Best for Avoca Beach were winger Cameron Steer, hooker Fion Henderson-Foley, inside centre Mitch Jacob and flanker Eden McQueen. The second half was very tight early on. Terrigal did cross for a try to extend their lead to 22 points to 15, but even at the midway point of this half this remained the score. It was in the final 20 minutes of the clash that Terrigal were able to surge ahead on the scoreboard and to secure the win. It was during this period that outside centre Mitch Hirst was able to cross for a further 2 tries to complete what was a great period of play for him and his team. Hirst crossed for a total of three tries in the match. Terrigal did outscore Avoca Beach by 17 points to nil in the second stanza and that was the obvious major difference in the match. Both teams showed they will be major forces in this year’s competition.

Hornsby hosted the Razorbacks at Woongarrah Oval No.2 after the closure of their home ground at Mark Taylor Oval. It proved a happy hunting ground for them as they were able to outlast the Razorbacks by 22 points to 13. The Razorbacks opened the scoring with a penalty goal to their flanker Jarrod Grange but it was Hornsby who scored the first try. The whole first half was a most even affair with both teams going point for point for much of the first 40 minutes. Hornsby led 7 points to 6 for quite awhile but by halftime the Razorbacks had regained the lead by the single point, by 13 points to 12. So it was obviously anyone’s match at that stage. The second half continued to be a real arm wrestle and both teams gave it their all. Best for Hornsby were flanker Sau Faupula, outside centre Harry Fox and No.8 and captain James McCarthy. The Razorbacks had several good performances including those from flanker Jarrod Grange, lock James Mann, centre Owen Turner and fullback Connor Peden. Hornsby were able to post 10 points in the second stanza while the Razorbacks were not able to post any further points in that period. The win is a boost for the Hornsby team and they have shown they are a threat again this year. The result of this match, and like several others recently, have proved that this year’s competition is a very even affair and no team can be taken lightly. It all makes for a very interesting season.

The Lakes defeated Warnervale at Woongarrah Oval No.1 to the tune of 21 points to 7. This match was an intense game throughout - a typical local derby between the two northern clubs. The Lakes had the better of the first half and went to the halftime break leading by 21 points to nil and it appeared they would go on with it on the scoreboard in the second period. But Warnervale came back strong and responded with a try early in the second half to make the score 21 points to 7. Midway through the second half a serious injury halted play to greatly disrupt the match. Best players for The Lakes were flanker Sean Anlezark, five-eight Brayden Hutchinson-Walters and No.8 Peni Rauluni. Warnervale never gave it in and it was prop Ketoni Toutai who scored their try and five-eight Matthew Hurley continued to direct very well for his team. Others to play well were flanker Joel Law, No.8 Leo Soane and lock Lachlan Natapu.

The Bay lost their President’s Cup clash with Kariong by 46 points to 10 at Kariong Oval yesterday.

Women’s Weekly Match Report: Round Five   8/05/2021
by Bronte Doorn

Hornsby               32           Ourimbah Razorbacks         12
Avoca Beach       15           Terrigal Trojans                     12
Warnervale          20            The Lakes                              5

A change of venue saw Hornsby host the Razorbacks at Warnervale. The Hornsby Nalas got off to a great start by scoring 3 tries in the first 6 minutes of the game, showcasing their speed and ball skills early. Razorbacks were strong through the middle, gaining momentum and metres, resulting in a runaway try by Ellie Dark in the 14th minute. The try was converted by Jaimi Elwin. The tough defensive efforts of both sides called for a much welcomed half-time break, with the Nala’s leading 15-7. The opening minutes of the second half saw the home team score a try under the posts. What followed was a tough contest for the ball, with both teams strong through the centre, making clutch tackles and turnovers. It wasn't until the 33rd minute that the next points were scored. The Nalas took advantage of some great running metres and quick ball to score 3 unanswered tries in a row, scoring one particularly spectacular try off a kickoff and quick phases. Despite the score, the Razorbacks put up a fight right until the final whistle. They showed everyone what they do best in the dying minutes of the game by scoring under pressure. Phase after phase saw the away team get closer and closer to the Nalas defensive line. Working as a team The Razorbacks crossed the line in spectacular style, bringing the final score to 32-12. An exciting game to say the least. Hornsby will play a night game for round 6 at The Haven against the Terrigal Trojans. The Razorback woman will be heading back to the pig pen for a fiercely contested match against Kariong.

A spectacular game of rugby was played at Heazlett Park over the weekend, which saw a nail-biting finish! The Sharks outplayed the Trojans in an epic display of rugby, passion and pride. This was the game to watch, Avoca continuing their momentum from a brilliant win the week before against a Terrigal side itching to take the field after a few weeks off. It was clear both sides wanted the win, each player stepping up and playing hard. The Trojans were missing some of their senior players, meaning other girls were playing out of position. The Terrigal woman defended hard but unfortunately couldn’t reap the rewards as they were unable to score off a few breaks made by Maddy Robinson through Avoca’s strong defensive line in the first half. Avoca’s unwavering defense proved to be the key difference in the match, making clutch tackles and contesting all rucks. Emily Lufe was outstanding over the ball and in contact, turning over valuable balls for the visiting team. Avoca scored two tries in quick succession; making the 2020 Premiers play catch up. And catch up they did. 2 back-to-back tries put them back in front. The game could have been anyone's and it wasn't until the final two minutes that the game was decided. A close but missed tackle by Terrigal’s Bella Tisch saw Deanna Gray cross the line for Avoca, putting the Sharks ahead by 3 in the dying minutes. Avoca won 15 points to 12. Despite the loss, the Trojan women showed incredible strength and unity by wearing black armbands in solidarity to support a teammate through the passing of a family member. Avoca will head to Woy Woy for round 6 with the hopes of ending the home team’s winning streak, whereas Terrigal will be hosting Hornsby for a night game where they will be looking for a win against the strong Nala side.

The Battle of the North took place at Woongarah Oval, both sides looking for glory. The physicality of both sides made for an exciting contest. Both sides were matched through the middle, with scrums and lineouts proving particularly challenging. Warnervale Wildcats showcased some lovely passages of play that saw points being added to the board in their favour. While the score may favour the Wildcats, the Ladies of the Lake played well, displaying some excellent passages of rugby and teamwork.
The final score saw the Wildcats win against the Ladies of the Lake 20-5. Both sides will have a bye in round six, providing a well-earned week off. The supportive and positive attitudes displayed from both teams were what got the woman through the 40 minutes, with each team showing camaraderie on and off the field. Thus, proving that being best of the north, isn't a title won on the field, but one shared off field.

PREMIER 1 REPORT :

In a wonderful game of Swietelsky Premier 1 rugby at Mark Taylor Oval, Hornsby and Kariong played out a 26 all draw. This match was neck and neck for the entire 80 minutes, and the game was only tied up at the fulltime whistle. Kariong opened the scoring with a try in the opening two minutes and it was just the start the visitors wanted. However, Hornsby hit back soon after with a converted try to take the lead by 7 points to 5. The scores in the match were always close and neither team was able to make a break on the other. The quality of the rugby was excellent and the intensity of the match was there for all to see. Kariong were keen to maintain their great recent form while Hornsby were wanting to celebrate their first home match with a win. The match remined even for the middle stages of the first half. Then Kariong next took the lead with a try, to lead 12-10, but soon after again, Hornsby responded with a second converted try to take the lead again 14-12. It was certainly proving a see-sawing clash. Hornsby scored their third try close to half time to go to the break leading by 19 points to 12. The second half continued in much the same vein, both teams giving their all and both teams have their respective periods of attack and defence. It was proving a hard fought and very even encounter. Kariong locked the scores up at 19 points apiece early in the half and the scores stayed that way for quite a while. Both teams had several excellent performances. For Hornsby, five-eight Sione Ala was excellent in all aspects of play, and he was very well supported by hooker Hosea Fotukava, No.8 James McCarthy, halfback Jack Woodrow and fullback Mitch Fullagar. Kariong were best served by flanker Nick Outram, lock Taylor Mildren, centre Lachlan Peruch, and halves Scott Hanley and Mitch Clay. Hornsby took the lead with about ten minutes to go but Kariong were not to be outdone. Kariong finished the match with several close attacks at the tryline and they were rewarded right in fulltime with a converted try to Mitch Clay to level the scores at 26 all. In some ways, the draw was an appropriate result for the match but both teams would rue the opportunity to get the victory. Both teams proved they will be close to the action at the end of the season.

Avoca Beach hosted the Razorbacks at Heazlett Park and were able to record a meritorious 31 to 24 win over the previously undefeated Razorbacks, Avoca Beach got away to a good start in this match and they were showing right from the kick-off they were to be a force on the day. They opened the scoring with two penalty goals to Sam Evans and they took an early 6 nil lead. The Razorbacks were quick to respond and scored the first try in the match to reduce the lead to 6-5. However, it remained Avoca Beach in the ascendancy for much of the rest of the first half and they were able to post a further 15 points in the half. Avoca Beach went to the halftime break with a very handy 21 points to 12 lead and it was all up to the Razorbacks to make a comeback in the second half. For most rugby supporters the size of the lead at the halfway point came as a surprise but the home side were certainly playing the better rugby. The second half was a far more even affair and both teams went point for point but that half time lead to Avoca Beach remained the difference. The Razorbacks did outscore the home team by 12 point to 10 in the second period but it was all too late. Best players for Avoca Beach were flankers Blake Jacob and Eden McQueen, five-eight Sam Evans, and fullback Mitch Briggs. The Razorbacks were best served by locks James Mann and Josefa Biu, hooker Sam Kearney and five-eight Pat Martin. The result of this match, and several others recently, have proved that this year’s competition is a very even affair and no team can be taken lightly. It all makes for a very interesting season.

The Lakes proved too strong for Woy Woy at Slade Park to record their first win of the season to the tune of 57 points to 28. It was Woy Woy who opened the scoring in this match and took the early lead. In fact, they led by 14 points to 7 early in the match and seemed they were continuing their great form from the previous Saturday. However gradually The Lakes took control and cemented a lead to demonstrate their best form for the year. The Lakes quickly grabbed the lead and jumped ahead and by halftime had leapt to a very handy 26 points to 14 lead. The Lakes were played some great rugby and their mercurial backline was proving almost unstoppable. The Lakes continued this form into the second half and were able to post a further 31 points in the final 40 minutes. Woy Woy did not stop however – they posted a further two tries to grab a valuable bonus point. It was obvious The Lakes wanted their first win for the year. Best players for The Lakes were fullback Jaydan Nauluvula, who crossed for 4 outstanding tries. Others to play well were back Macui Rauluni, who crossed for 2 tries, prop Ben Kaifa and five-eight Fillimoni Seru. Woy Woy gave it their all and their best performers were No.8 Philip Shaw, lock Pita Pio and hooker Unaloto Tupou.

WOMEN'S 10-A-SIDE REPORT by Bronte Doorn

The Lakes hosted Gosford/Woy Woy over the weekend for a well-deserved win for the visiting side.
The Lakes knew what to expect looking at the results from previous games and went into the game with confidence and spirit, nonetheless. The Lakes started off great, building on phase after phase, but Gosford/Woy Woy’s defence was outstanding and they worked hard. Small errors proved costly for the Ladies of the Lakes which allowed Gosford/Woy Woy to take the opportunity to score. And score they did! This seemed to be the story for most of the game. The Lakes were able to cross the line late in the game scoring their first points after a string of penalties against the visiting side. The Lakes will be looking to score a win next week against the Warnervale Wildcats in an exciting clash.

The Razorbacks didn't come away with a win against Avoca Sharks after their cracker of a win against The Lakes the week previous. The end result of 36-10 represents a hard-fought game. Avoca were very strong on the day of play in both defence and attack. Razorbacks had 2 runaway tries from Ellie Dark & Makayla McCarthy during the 1st & 2nd halves. The power of both teams were showcased the intensity in the scrum & line out which was great to see, making the game exciting and intense. Injuries during the match proved troubling for the Razorback woman but the resilience of the team got them through the rest of the game. Avoca proved to be the better team, coming away with an impressive win. Looking for a win, the Razorbacks will be heading to Hornsby for the next round, while the Avoca Women will be staying at home and hosting the undefeated Terrigal Trojans.

The Hornsby Nala’s were set to host Kariong at Mark Taylor Oval on Saturday for their Back to Hornsby – Andy Warner Memorial Day. The game demonstrated great strengths of both sides, with the opening minutes hotly contested. The deadlock, however, was broken in the 5th minute by Hornsby after a scrum win and quick ball which resulted in an outside break and try. Hornsby kept the momentum flowing by securing another try in the 8th minute. Hornsby went in the break leading 12-0. The defence of both teams made for a compelling match, with the second half being tightly contested. Kariong began to find a lot of forward momentum midway through the second half, demonstrating their ability to play hard and fast rugby. Constant defensive pressure from both sides made for a compelling 40 minutes. Two late tries in the game to the home team, sealed the deal for Kariong. The final result of the game being 22-0. While the final result produced a convincing win to Hornsby Nalas for their first home game of the season, it was a hard-fought game from both sides and a game that produced limited opportunities to get through each team’s defence. The Nala’s will be looking to continue their momentum into round 5 against the Razorbacks. Kariong woman will have a bye and will come into round six looking for redemption and a win.
