REPORT :

The Central Coast Rugby Union competition remains a closely fought affair with results yesterday making it no clearer on which teams will go into the Final Series at the end of the year. All matches were quite hard fought and no team went away with an easy win in their respective matches.

The Match of the Day saw Ourimbah maintain their successful run of victories when they defeated Kariong by 26 points to 19 at Kariong Oval. Ourimbah however certainly did not have it all their own way. Ourimbah did start very well and got away to an excellent lead. They controlled proceedings in the early stages and were the better team. This effective play enabled them to go to the halftime break leading relatively comfortably by 19 points to 5. It seemed at that stage that they would go on with it and cement another easy win. However it was not to be. The second half was a real arm wrestle with both teams throwing everything at each other. Kariong wanted a win and they played like it. They actually outscored Ourimbah in the second half by 14 points to 7 but time ran out in their efforts to get the win. Both teams played well. Ourimbah dominated the first half while Kariong showed their ability and spirit in the second half. Best players for Ourimbah were lock Matt Hopkins, forward Sam Kearney, and flanker James Blanch. Although Kariong outscored Ourimbah in that second period, Ourimbah did miss out on a lot of points through errors. The win sees Ourimbah maintain their big lead in the competition, while Kariong hang on to fourth spot still with a very possible spot on the cards for the Finals. It all makes for a very interesting last three weeks of the competition.

Avoca Beach and Woy Woy played out a 24 all draw at Heazlett Park. In some ways this was a fair result but probably neither team would think so. Both teams did control play at various stages but neither was able to go on with it and dominate the scoring. Woy Woy started the match so well. They were on the go forward right from the opening whistle. Within the first 12 minutes they had crossed for two excellent team tries, and had jumped to a very handy 14 points to nil lead. It appeared at that stage they would take charge based on how they were playing. The forward pack was strong and making several inroads into the Avoca Beach defence. However Avoca Beach was able to hit back and crossed for their own try soon after so at the midway point of the first half Woy Woy led by 14 points to 7. At that stage the match became a real arm wrestle with neither team able to gain any major ascendancy. Both teams had the opportunity to post points but vital errors at key stages prevented this. The two teams went to the half time break with Woy Woy leading by 14 points to 7. Avoca Beach started the second half very well. Within 5 minutes they had crossed for their second try and with the score at Woy Woy 14 Avoca Beach 12, the match was certainly up for grabs. Avoca Beach took control to some extent during the next 15 minutes when they were able to cross for two further tries. Suddenly they had jumped to a convincing 24 points to 14 lead and it seemed the home side would overcome their slow start to the match and get the win. However the final 10 minutes was controlled by Woy Woy. They crossed for a try in the corner, and then just before fulltime they were able to post their fourth try in the match. The conversion from near touch went wide, and the match was locked at 24 points apiece at fulltime. The draw sees Woy Woy maintain their third spot on the ladder but it makes things very difficult for Avoca Beach in the weeks to come. Best players for Woy Woy were No.8  Alifeleti Atiola, who made several strong runs, flanker Blake Arahill, lock Jack Dewar, and centre Wade Hannell. Avoca Beach were best served by No.8 Emile Thomas, while good performances by Mitch Jacob, Adam Chettle and Matt Pebbles were rewarded with a try each.

Warnervale scored a good win over Gosford at Gosford Showground by 27 points 12. Warnervale had the better of the first half and by halftime had built up a lead of 22 points to 7. It was this effort in the first half that secured them the victory. Warnervale played very well in that period. Their best players were Faava Neli, who crossed for 2 tries in the match, forward Kevin McNamara and five-eight Joey Walton. The second half was a far more even affair. Both teams were only able to score the single try in the final 40 minutes and this half of rugby developed into trench warfare. Gosford were best served in this period by Sam Underwood and Drew Neist. It was a welcome victory for Warnervale who had gone a long time between drinks.

Terrigal cemented their second spot on the competition ladder when they defeated Hornsby by 34 points to 12 at Mark Taylor Oval. The first half was a battle. Neither team was able to gain any real ascendancy in the first half. Terrigal went to the halftime break only leading by 10 points to 5 so both teams would have felt they were very much in this match. However the second half saw Terrigal take control. They were able to post a total of 24 points while the home side was only able to respond with a converted try. Both teams had their moments in this match. Best players for Terrigal were flanker Ryan Metcalfe, and wingers Brent Merritt and Dan Sargeant. For Hornsby, Ollie Jenkins and Sam White both put in solid performances once again.

The Entrance and The Lakes played out a tough match in President’s Cup at Joseph Banks Oval but it was The Lakes who scored right on the bell to secure the win by 14 points to 8.

The Women’s 7’s competition yesterday saw Avoca Beach, Terrigal, Hornsby, and Warnervale secure vital wins in their respective matches. Most of the teams are in a position to make the Finals, so there will be much intense action over the next few weeks.

REPORT :

Round 14 of Central Coast Rugby Union saw some very interesting results, as well as some quite high scoring matches. However the Top Four remains far from settled at this stage.

The Match of the Day saw Terrigal come from behind to defeat Avoca Beach by 45 points to 19 at The Haven Oval. The match was played in front of a huge crowd with wonderful weather conditions. Terrigal started the game extremely well and had crossed for the opening try in just the first few minutes. This 7 points to nil lead was however quickly overtaken. In fact much of the remainder of the first half was dominated by Avoca Beach. The visitors were playing the better rugby and were controlling most aspects of the game. It was during this period that Avoca Beach had taken the lead, and close to halftime were leading by 19 points to 7. Terrigal did kick a penalty goal close to the break to make the halftime score Avoca Beach 19 Terrigal 10. At that stage the match was certainly up for grabs but Avoca Beach were definitely taking the game to the home team. The second half saw both teams battle it out in the early stages but, as the match went on, Terrigal became stronger and stronger, both on the paddock and on the scoreboard. Terrigal took control in the final 20 minutes and were able to cross for several match winning tries. For the second week in a row Avoca Beach were kept scoreless in the second half. Best players for Terrigal were No.8 Mike Ozdilli, lock Joe Taylor, and flanker Salipopo Pamata. These forwards led a pack of forwards who took control of the set pieces. Another feature of the match was the goal kicking of Mark Koteczky, who kicked all 6 conversions, and added a penalty goal as well. Avoca Beach gave it their all, but just could not maintain the effort for the full 80 minutes. Best players for the visitors were veteran prop Luke Sheridan, fullback Dylan Cadogan and winger Shaun Townsend. The loss sees Avoca Beach in a fight for their lives to make the Finals and will need things to go totally their way to do so. Terrigal, with the win, hang on to second spot and have showed form resurgence in recent weeks.

The Lakes recorded a crucial victory at Slade Park when they defeated Warnervale by 24 points to 10. It was such an important win for the home side as it places them just out of the Top Four, still with a significant chance of making the Finals. The Lakes were controlling much of the game in the first half and went to the halftime break with a very handy 14 points to nil lead. It was a good lead but not enough at that stage. The Lakes went further ahead in the second half to lead 19 points to nil. However the final parts of the match saw Warnervale post two tries to reduce the lead but it was all too late. Best players for The Lakes were forwards Jerry Tikomailepanoni and James McCombie, who both worked hard for the entire 80 minutes. The backs, led by Macui Raulini, Dylan Galvin and Fillimona Seru, certainly took advantage of the good ball supplied by the forward pack. Warnervale fought to the end, and players such as Kevin McNamara and Matt Willmot never stopped giving their all.

Woy Woy hung on to defeat Gosford by 50 points to 40 at Woy Woy Oval. This match was a try fest to say the least. Attack seemed to be the key to the day while the defence from both teams seemed to be a secondary factor. Gosford went to the halftime break leading by 21 point to 14. Gosford deserved their lead through some very good rugby. However Woy Woy took the lead early in the second half when they crossed for two very quick tries. They had jumped to the lead by 26 points to 21. At that stage it seemed the home side would go on with it and secure a comfortable victory. But it was not to be. Gosford got back into the match and pushed the home side right through to full time. It was a tight struggle throughout but Woy Woy were able to outlast the visitors on the scoreboard. Best players for Woy Woy were Dante Otto, Wes Black and Alifeleti Atiola. These three players led what was a good attacking team. They will have to work on their defence mechanisms over the next few weeks as they allowed Gosford to score too readily during the match. Gosford were best served by centre Josh McGlynn, who had a wonderful match, as well as veteran back Adam Carlisle. These two players led a visitor resurgence when things seemed lost early in the second half. The win sees Woy Woy hold on to third spot on the competition ladder but with teams just out of the Top Four, they cannot afford to relax in the coming weeks.

Ourimbah proved far too strong for Hornsby at Ourimbah Rugby Park. The home side ran out winners by 64 points to 24. The match was all but over by halftime when Ourimbah had already raced to a 36 points to 0 lead. Hornsby simply had no answer to what was a very good overall team performance. Hornsby made a far better effort in the second half. They were able to post their own 24 points but still allowed Ourimbah to increase their lead by another 28 points. Ourimbah showed why they are leading this competition and have all but secured the Minor Premiership. Hornsby, although defeated, are still very capable of scoring points. Best players for Ourimbah were No 8. Elekama Laupola, five-eight Jonte Witt, and Rob Peden, who was able to score two tries on his return from injury. Hornby never stopped and were best served by lock Ben Toga, who scored a try, flanker Ollie Jenkins and five-eight Sam White.

The Women’s 7’s competition yesterday saw Avoca Beach, Terrigal, Hornsby and Woy Woy secure vital wins in their respective matches. With four weeks to go, things are quite close for the 6 teams as they race for a position in the Finals Series.

REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union competition continues to tighten as the season enters the last 5 rounds of the season. The results yesterday saw a distinct Top Four develop; however there are a couple of teams looming just behind them on the competition ladder.

The Match of the Day saw Woy Woy storm home to defeat The Lakes by 49 points to 22 at Slade Park. The first half was a very even affair with both teams giving their all. There was absolutely nothing between the two teams as both teams went to the halftime break locked at 10 points apiece. It appeared at that stage that the match would go right down to the wire. However the second hall was a whole different matter. The second half was all Woy Woy. They were able to post 39 points to 12 in what was a most dominant performance. The Lakes tried everything to get back into the match but things simply did not go their way on the day. The harder they tried the less likely things were going to work out. The outstanding individual performance was by Woy Woy back Blake Arahill who crossed for 4 personal tries in what was his best effort this year. He very well supported by centre Wade Hannell and forward Nick Garnett. Others to play well included Wes Black, who crossed for 2 tries, and Adam McVean The win was so important for Woy Woy as it places them in fourth position, with a small gap to the following teams. They have some breathing space, at least for a few weeks. Best players for the home side were forwards James McCombie and Harry Pirini, while winger Eddie Uniwawa was dangerous with the ball in hand. The Lakes would be most disappointed with their second half effort. They are so close to the Finals but will now need to get some crucial wins over the remaining 5 weeks of the competition.

Ourimbah confirmed their favouritism for the Premiership when they came from behind to defeat Avoca Beach by 41 points to 18 at Heazlett Park. The first half was a very even struggle but it was Avoca Beach who went to the break with the lead. The home side played very well in the first 40 minutes and their lead of 18 points to 12 at the halftime break was very well deserved. They worked hard for their lead and they had Ourimbah a little frustrated at that stage. The second half saw things change completely. Ourimbah came storming out after the break and they were able to post 29 unanswered points in the second half. It was such a turnaround. Avoca Beach had no answer to this onslaught. Ourimbah were too big and too strong during this period, and Avoca Beach’s youthful teams had no answer. Best players for Ourimbah, especially in the second half, were prop Brett Cunningham, forward Keegan Evans, back Owen Turner and Will Fraser. The score line of 7 tries to 2 gives a fair indication of the flow of the match. Best players for the home side were centre Mitch Jacob, who was well supported by flankers Harrison Bowcock and Liam Donsworth. The loss leaves Avoca Beach in a vulnerable position in terms of the Top Four and the next few weeks will be vital.

The other two matches saw Top Four teams cement their positions with most dominate performances. Terrigal was able to defeat Gosford, while Kariong were far too strong for Hornsby.

At Gosford Showground Terrigal defeated Gosford by 43 points to 12. The first 20 minutes was quite an even struggle and no points were posted by either side during that period. However the match soon opened up and it was Terrigal who took control. Terrigal went to the break leading by 26 points to 5 so the visitors certainly took control in the period leading up to halftime. Terrigal were able to maintain control in the second period and were able to post a further 17 points in the final 40 minutes. Best players for Terrigal were flanker Ryan Metcalfe, while wingers Dan Sargeant and Brent Merritt were both able to cross for a double each. Forward Joe Taylor was also strong, as was centre Vaughan Kernan. Jackson Steinbeck never stopped for the home side, and was rewarded with a try. The win sees Terrigal hold their second spot on the ladder in what is developing into a close battle for the Finals. Gosford remain at the bottom of the table which will see them start preparing for 2019.

Kariong were far too strong for Hornsby at Kariong Oval, and ran out winners by 64 points to 27. In a match most thought may be quite a struggle, it proved to be a very one sided clash. Kariong went to the halftime break leading by 36 points to 10 and the match was all but over even at that stage. Kariong continued their good form into the second stanza and were able to post a further 28 points during that time. Best player for Kariong was Blake Silvester, who crossed for 4 personal tries, and he never stopped for the entire 80 minutes. He was well supported by forward Toutai Aho, and backs Henry Ahovelo and Mitch Clay. Hornsby were best served by flanker John King, Harry Fox and Chris O’Rourke. The win sees Kariong lock in third position on the competition ladder.

The Women’s 7’s competition yesterday saw Avoca Beach and Warnervale secure vital wins in their respective matches.

REPORT :

Central Coast Rugby Union continued yesterday with some excellent games of rugby. Tension and excitement continues to build as we get closer to the Finals. There is still 6 weeks to go and anything can happen as teams are very close in all grades.

In the Match of the Day, Terrigal had a very good second half to run out winners over The Lakes by 41 points to 17 at The Haven Oval. There was absolutely nothing between the two teams in the first 40 minutes, both teams went point for point and neither team was able to gain any ascendancy. Both teams were playing pleasing rugby and there were many opportunities for points scoring. It was The Lakes who scored a converted try right on halftime to enable them to go to the break leading by 12 points to 11. At that stage it appeared the match would go right down to the wire. However it was in that final 40 minutes that Terrigal were able to break away on the scoreboard. Terrigal were able to cross for several tries but at the same time were able to limit The Lakes to the single try. Terrigal posted 5 tries in the match to The Lakes’ 3 and that was a fair indication of the flow of the match. Best players for Terrigal were flankers Salipopo Pamata and Ryan Metcalfe, halfback Sekope Maea and hooker James Storey. A pleasing feature of the match were the tries scored by Terrigal’s outside backs, Brent Merritt, Dan Sargeant and Mitch Hirst. The Lakes were definitely in this match for much of it, but it did get away from them in those final 15 minutes. The Lakes has several good players, and these included five-eight Fillimona Seru, and forwards Harry Pirini and James McCombie. The win sees Terrigal jump back into second spot on the competition ladder while The Lakes remain in the Top Four despite the loss.

Kariong secured a further victory when they defeated Warnervale at Woongarrah Oval by 29 points to 21. This was such a significant win for Kariong as it sees them go to third spot on the ladder. The win culminates in a significant comeback for Kariong after being far down the ladder earlier in the season. However, they did not have it all their own way in this clash. The two teams alternated the lead throughout the entire 80 minutes. Kariong only led by 5 points to nil at the halftime break, so it is obvious the first stanza was such an even struggle. Most points were scored in the second half. Warnervale took the lead immediately after halftime with a converted try. After that the lead in the match chopped and changed. Kariong did score 5 tries to 3 in the match and that may be a fair indication of how the match panned out. Best performers for Kariong were lock Adam Pearson, who scored 2 tries, halfback Scott Hanley and five-eight Mitch Clay. Warnervale will be most disappointed with the result. It makes things difficult for them. Best for the home side on the day were the McNamara brothers, Kevin and Cameron, who both never stopped all day.

Ourimbah showed why they are at the top of the competition ladder when they blitzed Gosford by 76 points to 12 at Ourimbah Rugby Park. The match was never in doubt for the home side as they went about their business. Ourimbah went to the halftime break leading by 33 points to 12. They maintained the performance in the second half when they were able to post a further 43 unanswered points. It was a most creditable performance to say the least. Best players for Ourimbah were prop Will Fraser and five-eight Jonte Witt, while flanker Jarrod Grange was able to post 21 individual points with a try and 8 goals. Ourimbah are 16 points clear at the top of the competition ladder and appear almost certain of having secured the Minor Premiership at this stage of the season. Gosford were unable to make any impact on the home side. The visitor’s best players were Jackson Steinbeck, Sam Underwood and Isaac Steinbeck.

Hornsby scored an upset win over Avoca Beach at Mark Taylor Oval when they won by 31 points to 19. Hornsby got away to a great start and by halftime had jumped to a very handy 19 points to nil lead. During this first 40 minutes both teams probably had equal possession, but it was Hornsby who took their chances and Avoca Beach did not. Avoca Beach attacked for lengthy periods but just could not get the points on the scoreboard. Hornsby were certainly playing well. Best players for the home side were outside centre Harry Fox, hooker John King and No.8 Lachlan Skulander. Hornsby continued the rage soon after the break and crossed for a further try. At that stage their lead seemed invincible. However Avoca Beach started to get going soon after and made a resurgence. They were able to cross for three tries, but the early Hornsby lead was too large to overcome. Best players for Avoca Beach in their resurgence period were flanker Liam Donsworth and fullback Shaun Townsend. The loss for Avoca Beach sees them positioned just out of the Top Four and the next few weeks will be most significant for them. Hornsby showed they will trouble all teams in the final 6 rounds and they will cause heartache for all opposition.

The Entrance secured a vital win in President’s Cup when they defeated Woy Woy by 18 points to 17 at Ettalong Oval. There was absolutely nothing in this match and both sides felt victory was very possible for the entire match. For the second week in a row The Entrance was able to kick a penalty goal on the fulltime whistle to snatch the victory.

The Women’s 7’s competition yesterday witnessed some exciting results and some very good rugby. Woy Woy, Terrigal and Avoca Beach secured wins in their respective matches.

REPORT :
Round 11 in Central Coast Rugby Union continued yesterday with some outstanding games of rugby.

The Match of the Day at Woongarrah Oval saw one of the best and most exciting games of rugby this season. Ourimbah were able to hang on for victory against a gallant The Lakes side, running out winners by 22 points to 17. There was very little in this match from start to finish and the result was not secured until the very final whistle. The first half was an arm wrestle with both teams having their chances of taking control of the match. Ourimbah went to the halftime break leading by only 12 points to 5 and it was obvious at that stage that the match would go right down to the wire. Ourimbah did grab a handy lead early in the second half however. Ourimbah led by 19 points to 10, then by 22 points to 10 and at the midway point of the second stanza things were looking good for them. However The Lakes were not to be denied. The Lakes did finish the stronger. They scored a converted try, and then finished the match on the attack and close to scoring. However excellent Ourimbah defence kept The Lakes from scoring. It was nail biting rugby. Ourimbah were able to hold the score at 22 points to 17 at the fulltime whistle, and this win maintained their position at the top of the competition ladder. Best players for Ourimbah were flanker Craig Thomas, props Will Fraser and Jordan Clark, while five-eight Jonte Witt played well. The Lakes showed they will be a force in the competition this year. They were best served by wingers Dylan Galvin and Eddie Vuniiwawa, and inside centre Paula Sauta. Both teams will take a huge amount from this match, and both teams showed they should feature strongly in the end of year matches.

Kariong continued their strong mid-season run with a good win over Avoca Beach by 28 points to 14 at Kariong Oval. The first half was an even battle on the field and on the scoreboard. The gusty wind was making things a little difficult but both teams really did have chances of scoring several tries in the first 40 minutes. However both teams were a little guilty of dropped ball at vital stages. It was an intense struggle with some very heavy defence. The two teams went to the halftime break locked at 14 points apiece, and the match was certainly up for grabs. Kariong took the lead early in the second half with a converted try and this lead of 21 points to 14 remained the status quo for much of the remainder of the match. Avoca Beach attacked incessantly for long periods in the second half but just could not break through. Strong Kariong defence kept them out. In fact, Avoca Beach probably did more of the attacking in the second period but errors at vital stages and committed Kariong defence kept them scoreless in the final 40 minutes. Kariong sealed the win in the final minutes when winger Henry Ahovelo raced away to post his second try in the match. Best players for Kariong were hooker Justin Walker, No.8 Blake Silvester, and winger Henry Ahovelo. Avoca Beach were best served by fullback Shaun Townsend, flanker Liam Donsworth and five-eight Dylan Cadogan, who posted all of the visitor’s points. Both these teams are now just out of the Top Four but are so close - it all makes for a few very interesting weeks coming up.

Woy Woy came from behind to defeat Warnervale by 30 points to 17 at Woy Woy Oval. Warnervale had the better of the first half and went to the halftime break leading by 17 points to 5. The visitors had played well in the first half and they deserved their lead. Cameron McNamara was strong for them and he was able to cross for two personal tries. The 3 tries scored by Warnervale in the first half appeared to suggest that they were more than likely to go on and get the win, but things certainly changed after the halftime break. Woy Woy came out a different team and started to play some impressive rugby. In fact in the final 40 minutes, Woy Woy was able to score 25 unanswered points, a huge change from the first half where Warnervale did dominate. Best players for Woy Woy in their second half resurgence were inside centre Sunita Fihaki, who scored 2 tries, his centre partner Wade Hannell, and five-eight Fokolulu Taumalolo. The Woy Woy backline certainly clicked into gear in the second half. Best for Warnervale were forward Cameron McNamara, halfback Brenton Acreman and back Mitch Johnson.

Gosford secured their first win in quite awhile when they defeated Hornsby by 33 points to 26 at Mark Taylor Oval. The match was a tight affair throughout with neither team able to make the complete break on the other on the scoreboard. Gosford did score 5 tries to 4 and that fact alone displays the closeness and intensity of the match. The two teams were locked at 12 points a piece at the halftime break and the second half continued in much the same vein. However Gosford were able to hang on to grab the win. Best players for Gosford were backs Josh McGlynn and Adam Carlisle, while forwards Ben Eccles and Mitch Cornwell were always in the midst of the action. Hornsby were best served by forwards Angus MacQueen and Toby Forde.

The Entrance secured a vital win in President’s Cup when they defeated Terrigal by 8 points to 7 at Joseph Banks Oval on Friday night. There was absolutely nothing in this match and both sides felt victory was very possible for the entire match. The win sees The Entrance sneak into fourth position on the competition ladder in what is proving a closely fought competition.

The Women’s 7’s competition yesterday witnessed some exciting results and some very good rugby. Woy Woy continued their winning ways while Terrigal and Avoca Beach both secured vital wins in their respective matches.
