REPORT :
In the Premier 1 Minor Semi-final at Woy Woy Oval, Gosford defeated The
Lakes by 29 points to 14. In a match that never really rose to any great heights it
was a match that developed into a war of attrition for large parts of the contest.
After a quite even opening few minutes it was Gosford who opened the scoring in the 6th minute of play. A converted try saw Gosford jump to a 7 points to 0 lead very early on. It was the start that they wanted. Gosford were having the better of play in this opening stage of the clash. They increased their lead in the 15th minute when they crossed for their second converted try. This 14 points to nil lead was deserved at that stage. The middle stages of the first half however developed into an arm wrestle and was proving a very even contest. Both teams had further chances to score but probably more so The Lakes. They attacked the Gosford line for long periods in the first half but dropped ball and forced passes, saw opportunities to score go wanting. It was a quite frustrating period for The Lakes’ attack. However they did cross for a try
five minutes before halftime to get their scoring going. This scoreline of 14 points to 7 was the score at halftime so both teams knew they were well and truly in this clash. The second half continued in much the same vein. Both teams were trying to cement the win but errors at the wrong time were affecting both teams. However, Gosford did make things safer when they crossed for their third try very early in the second half. This score of 21 points to 7 was a handy lead even at this stage of the match. Gosford then scored their fourth try in the 22nd minute of the second stanza and they all but had the win secure at that stage when they led by 26 points to 7. Gosford were taking their chances while The Lakes were being frustrated by missed chances. Gosford had several good players in the match. Players such as flanker Sean Anzelark, centre Lenny Van der Velde, lock Alec Corcoran and prop Jonah Manuao were leading from the front and were making inroads into The Lakes defence. Best players for The Lakes were No. 8 Peni Raulini, flanker Paul Wilson and five-eight Marshall Hemopo. The Lakes never stopped trying. They scored a try in the 31st minute and with score 26 -14 they threw everything at Gosford to try to bridge the gap. However it was not to be. A penalty goal late in the match to Gosford sealed the victory with the final score being Gosford 29 The Lakes 14. Gosford move on further into the Finals and will play the loser of next week’s Major Semi-final in the Preliminary Final in 2 weeks time. The Lakes would be disappointed with the result but not with their season. They made the Finals and competed well all year.

The Lakes recorded a most convincing win in the Premier 2 Minor Semi-final when they defeated Gosford by 46 points to 10. The Lakes were always in control. They scored their first try early on in the match and then were able to regularly post tries throughout the remainder of the contest. Gosford simply had no answer to their play. The Lakes went to the halftime break leading by 26 points to 5 and had all but secured the win even at that stage. They continued to attack in the second half and were able to post a further 20 points in the second stanza. Best for The Lakes were fullback Alec Herridge, who scored a personal tally of 21 points, prop Jack Akehurst, halfback Liam Baker and lock Chad Goodhand. Gosford were best served by No.8 Wes Bull and centre Richie Cully.

Avoca Beach were able to win the President’s Cup Minor Semifinal defeating The Lakes by 21 points to 12. Avoca Beach scored early in the match with a try and a penalty goal and this lead of 8 points to nil early on held them in good stead for the remainder of the match. Avoca Beach went on to lead by 18 points to 5 at the halftime break so they obviously went into the second half full of confidence. The final half saw a real arm wrestle with The Lakes outscoring Avoca Beach by 7 points to 3 but it was all too late for them. Avoca Beach continue on while The Lakes hang up their boots for another season.

In what proved a one sided clash Avoca Beach defeated Gosford in the Under 19 Minor Semifinal by 40 points to 7. Avoca Beach scored their first try in the opening minutes before Gosford responded with their one try in the match. The Gosford lead was very short-lived as Avoca Beach quickly gained control in the match and went on to record a most convincing victory. Gosford never stopped trying but it was all in vain It is Avoca Beach who continue on to the Preliminary Final.

The Women’s 7’s Minor Semi-final saw Woy Woy prove too strong for Hornsby and ran out winners by 20 points to 5. The match was won by Woy Woy in the first half when they crossed for 3 tries to lead at the break by 15 points to nil. Both teams scored a try in the second half but it was Woy Woy who move on into the Preliminary Final. Hornsby women were the first team from their club to compete in the CCRU Finals and would have enjoyed the experience despite the loss.

REPORT :
The Match of the Day at Gosford Showground saw Ourimbah outlast Gosford and ran out winners by 40 points to 29. It was an even struggle throughout with both teams having a share of the lead at various times throughout the 80 minutes. Gosford got away to the better start and by halftime led by 12 points to 11. Even early in the second half Gosford still led by 19 points to 11. However it was at this stage that the match really opened up. Ourimbah sprung into life and were able to cross for two converted tries within 2 minutes. This enabled them to take the lead by 25 points to 19. The match was certainly up for grabs at that stage. It was Ourimbah who took control in the latter stages of the match and were able to cross for a couple of late tries while Gosford was only able to respond with one. Best players for Ourimbah were No.8 Rob Peden, lock Josefa Biu and hooker Jordan Clark. Best for Gosford were flanker Sean Anelzark, and centres Josh McGlynn and Jackson Steinbeck. Ourimbah, with this win, got back into the winning ways, and will go into the Major Semi-final in 2 weeks time against Terrigal with renewed confidence. It was also a pleasing hit out for Gosford and they will be ready to go next Saturday in the Minor Semi-final against The Lakes.

Terrigal confirmed their very good recent form when they easily accounted for The Lakes by 60 points to 14 at Slade Park. Terrigal were in front on the scoreboard early on and by halftime had jumped to 29 points to 14 lead. They continued on in this very good form and posted a further 31 points in the second stanza while the home side were unable to respond with any points. Terrigal showed just the right form leading into the Finals Series. Best for Terrigal on the day were prop Nathan Simpson, winger Dan Sargeant and flanker Ryan Metcalfe. The Lakes were best served by James McCombie, Logan Hemopo and Epi Vure. The Lakes will work hard this week at training at prepare for their Minor Semi-final against Gosford next weekend.

The other two matches on the Central Coast yesterday were very close. Warnervale defeated Hornsby by 41 points to 35 at Woongarrah Oval, while at Woy Woy Oval, Woy Woy hung on to defeat Kariong by 35 to 31. There was absolutely nothing between these respective teams in both these two matches.
Warnervale went to the halftime break leading by a narrow 22 points to 14 and this tight score was also the situation at fulltime. Warnervale finished the season on a high and completed the year only the one win out of the Top Four.
Woy Woy also finished the season on a high. Woy Woy went to the halftime break leading by 23 points to 19 and were able to maintain that lead at the 80 minute mark. They won their last two matches of the season after what was a quite difficult year.

At Joseph Banks Oval, Avoca Beach were too strong for The Entrance in the President’s Cup, running out winners by 26 points to 7

Women’s 7’s rugby yesterday saw the last round of matches for this season. Four of the teams now head into the Finals Series. Most results went as expected with wins to Terrigal, Woy Woy and Hornsby.

REPORT :

The Match of the Day at The Haven Oval yesterday saw Terrigal defeat Ourimbah by 41 points to 22. The win by Terrigal ended Ourimbah’s undefeated run for the season and certainly opened up this year’s Central Coast Rugby Union competition. It was a hard fought and even struggle for three quarters of the match but it was Terrigal who dominated the latter stages of the match to secure a pleasing victory for the home side. The first half was a totally even affair with the two teams going to the halftime break level at 15 points apiece. Both teams had periods of attack followed by some great defence. Ourimbah were striving to maintain their unbeaten run while Terrigal were attempting to record their first win over Ourimbah in quite a while. The second half continued in much the same way. Both teams were able to cross for a converted try each at the start of the second period. At the midway point of this half the scores were still all locked up, at 22 points each. It was still anybody’s match. It was a typical clash between the two best performing teams in this year’s competition. However, it was Terrigal who stormed home in that final 20 minutes. They were able to post an impressive 19 points in the final quarter of the match to record their best win of the season. Best players for Terrigal were hooker Jim Storey, locks Alex Brewin and Josh Vainikolo, and prop Kevin McNamara. Best performers for Ourimbah were halfback Josh Holman, prop Cameron Kesby and lock Josefa Biu. It was a most impressive team effort by the Terrigal outfit. The win sees Terrigal replace Ourimbah as leaders in the race to the Minor Premiership. Both teams are locked on 69 points and the Minor Premiership will be decided in the final round next Saturday.

The Lakes defeated Warnervale by 46 points to 28 at Slade Park in such an important victory for the home side. The win sees The Lakes cement fourth spot on the competition ladder and the Final Four for this year has already been decided with one round to go. It was a most dominant performance by The Lakes in a match that most people thought would go right down to the wire. The Lakes controlled proceedings right from the start and by halftime led by 29 points to 7. The home side all but had the match secure at that stage but there was to be no relenting on the scoreboard. The second half was a far more even affair with Warnervale actually slightly outscoring The Lakes by 21 points to 17 but it was all too late for the visitors. The win will see The Lakes play in the Minor Semi-final in 2 week’s time against Gosford. Best players for The Lakes were forward James McCombie and back Peni Raulini, who both scored 2 tries apiece. Best for Warnervale were Brenton Acreman, Potika Phiva and Dean Crofskey.

Avoca Beach ended their season with a win over Kariong at Kariong Oval, running out winners by 30 points to 22. Having the bye in their final round, Avoca Beach would have enjoyed finishing the season with a pleasing win. It was a close encounter throughout the match. Avoca Beach went to the halftime break with a narrow lead of 12 points to 10. The second half continued in the same vein as the first. Avoca Beach did score 5 tries to 4 and this fact alone demonstrated the closeness of the clash. A feature of the match were the 3 tries scored by 2 players. Avoca Beach’s Shaun Townsend crossed for 3 tries, as did Kariong’s Rob Brown. Despite the win, Avoca Beach will just miss out on the Final Four for this year. Best players for Avoca Beach were lock Elliott Dawkins, hooker Fion Henderson-Foley, and Shaun Townsend. Best performers for Kariong were Rob Brown, Richard Harvey and Scott Hanley.

Woy Woy recorded their second win of the season when they accounted for Hornsby by 42 points to 19 at Woy Woy Oval. It was a most pleasing effort by the team and it was a well deserved victory. Woy Woy went to the halftime break leading by 14 points to 5 however they went on with it in the second stanza. It was a rewarding way for Woy Woy to hit back after what has been a frustrating season for them. Best players for Woy Woy were Sunita Fihaki, Joseva Kunawave and Alex Moore. Hornsby gave it their all but it was just not their day in this “battle of the lions”. Best for the visitors were Harry Fox, who scored 2 tries, Sam White and Mitch Fullager.

At Gosford Showground, The Entrance was too strong for Gosford in the President’s Cup, running out winners by 52 points to 19.

Women’s 7’s rugby yesterday saw all eight teams in action. Most results went as expected with several teams in line to make the Finals this year. Wins were recorded by Avoca Beach, Terrigal, The Lakes and Woy Woy.

REPORT :
The seaside derby at Heazlett Park, in the Match of the Day, saw Terrigal easily account for Avoca Beach by 59 points to 13. In front of an enthusiastic crowd, Terrigal took control of the match almost from the opening whistle and were never headed in the contest. The first 40 minutes had Terrigal in control of both territory and possession. In fact by halftime they had jumped to a comfortable 26 points to 6 lead and things seemed almost a foregone conclusion in the match even at that stage. Terrigal were playing some very strong rugby and both their attack and defence were on song. Best players for Terrigal at this stage were lock Josh Vainikolo, who crossed for 2 tries, Alex Brewin and back Jayden Woolley. But it was their whole team who were playing well. Avoca Beach were trying everything to stay in touch but it just proved too difficult to do so. The story was much the same in the second half. Terrigal continued to dominate and they were able to post a further 33 points in the final 40 minutes. The form of Terrigal is an ominous sign heading to the Finals. Avoca Beach never stopped trying. In fact they were rewarded with a try near fulltime but it was all too late for the home team. Best players for Avoca Beach were Harrison Bowcock, Alex Halls, and prop Jake McPhie. Terrigal, with this win, cement themselves in second spot on the competition ladder and can now start preparing for the Major Semi-final in 4 weeks time. Avoca Beach, with the loss, are now in a struggle with The Lakes and Warnervale for fourth spot on the ladder.

Warnervale caused a minor upset when they defeated Gosford at Woongarrah Oval by 24 points to 21. This was a quite even affair throughout. Gosford opened the scoring with a converted try but Warnervale quickly responded with heir own converted try to make the score 7 all midway through the first half. Gosford did take some control of the match late in the first half when they crossed for two further tries to go to the halftime break leading by 21 points to 7. This was a handy lead in the match but Gosford however were unable to post any further points in the second half. On the other hand, Warnervale were able to score 3 tries in the final 40 minutes to clinch the match. Gosford led by 21 points to 19 with time running out but Warnervale crossed for their match winning fourth try right on fulltime. The win sees Warnervale still with a chance of making the Top Four while Gosford, while disappointed with the result, know they have cemented third spot on the competition ladder. It all makes for a very interesting final two rounds in the competition to see which club actually locks in fourth position on the ladder. The best players for Warnervale were fullback Ben Butler, who crossed for 2 tries in the second half, and centre Scott Fitzpatrick. Best for Gosford was lock Alec Corcoran and five-eight Adam Carlisle.

The Lakes came from behind to defeat Hornsby by 36 points to 19 at Mark Taylor Oval. This match was definitely one of two halves. The first half saw Hornsby in control. They went to the halftime break leading by 19 points to 5 and everything appeared to be in their favour. It was not the position The Lakes needed to be in but Hornsby demonstrated some fine rugby to take this handy lead. However the second half was a totally different ball game. The Lakes responded with 31 points in the second half while Hornsby remained scoreless. It was an amazing turn around both on the paddock and on the scoreboard. The Lakes certainly needed the win as they are now in clear fourth spot on the competition ladder but know they have teams looming just behind them. Best players for The Lakes were halfback Logan Hemopo, fullback Macui Raulini and Latham Walters. Best for Hornsby were backs Harry Fox, Leone Naisaorotaboa and Sam White.

Ourimbah continued on their winning ways with a strong win over Kariong at Kariong Oval, running out victors by 53 points to 5. Ourimbah got away to a great start and were never headed. In fact, by halftime, Ourimbah led by 34 points to 5 and the match was already secured away at that stage. Kariong simply had no answer to the Ourimbah attack. Ourimbah showed why they have gone through the season undefeated and showed why they are the Premiership favourites leading into the Finals. The win also puts them in good stead for their big clash next Saturday against fellow frontrunners Terrigal. Ourimbah were good all day. Best players for them were Mavae Muru Teutau, who crossed for 3 individual tries, halfback Matt King, and prop Jordan Clark. However it was a good all round performance by the whole team. Best for Kariong were Ricky Walter, and flankers Lachlan Peruch and Josh Bottero.
Woy Woy defeated The Entrance in President’s Cup by 24 points to 17 in a close match at Joseph Banks Oval.

Women’s 7’s rugby continued to enthral on the Central Coast. Terrigal confirmed their status as Premiership favourites when they accounted for last year’s Premiers Avoca Beach. The Lakes also continued their improving form when they defeated Hornsby.
