REPORT :

In the Match of the Day Gosford scored another unexpected win when they defeated Ourimbah at Gosford Showground by 36 points to 8. In what was a very physical clash, it was hard fought from start to finish. Even though the scores got away in Gosford’s favour towards the end, it was a tight match for much of the 80 minutes.
Ourimbah opened the scoring in the first minute when their No.8 Jarrod Grange kicked a penalty goal. Gosford however were quick to respond with a good team try, when Sam Underwood crossed wide out. A very good conversion from near touch by centre Tim Hill saw Gosford jump to an early 7 points to 3 lead. The first 40 minutes saw a flowing match with both sides prepared to throw the ball around, and as a result the match certainly became an entertaining game of running rugby in the first half. Gosford went further ahead midway through the first half when a forward surge saw prop Simote Lauti cross for his team’s second try. The conversion saw Gosford leap to a very handy 14 points to 3 lead. This remained the score until the half time break. Both teams had some very good players in that first 40 minutes. Players that stood out for Gosford were five-eight Josh McGlynn, halfback Joel Wagner, hooker Vince Stewart and flanker Hugo Pike. Ourimbah also had some very good performers. The pick of these were prop Brett Cunningham, hooker Clint Guyatt, No.8 Jarrod Grange, and flanker Tom Sheean. The start of the second half saw Ourimbah straight onto the attack. They continually attacked the Gosford line and certainly had their chances. Dropped passes saw a few tries go begging. Good defence by Gosford was very handy but Ourimbah would rue their chances during this period. They did cross for one try to reduce the lead to 14 points to 8 and at that stage, the 55th minute mark, the game was certainly up for grabs. Gosford kicked a penalty goal at this stage to increase their lead by 17 points to 8, and with 20 minutes to go both teams knew they had the chance to win. However Gosford cemented the victory with two length of the field intercepts both against the run of play. Replacement winger Jarrod Christensen took both intercepts, racing 80 metres to score both tries under the posts. It was a heartbreaking way to end the match for the visitors but a win to Gosford that sees them sneak into the Top Four. The result certainly does open up the race for the Top Four with now 6 teams in the race for the important semi-final spots

In another top of the table clash, Kariong came from behind to defeat Woy Woy by 22 points to 15 at Kariong Oval. Unlike the above match, this clash was a tough, physical and very defensive game of rugby. Both teams displayed brilliant defence, and both attacks found it almost impossible to break through for vital points. Woy Woy had the slightly better of the first half and led by 15 points to 10 at the halfway mark. They had crossed for two tries and would have been very hopeful of going on with it to record the win. Woy Woy had several very good players during the match. These players included Wade Hannell, who continues to display great form, Nick Garnett, and Sione Toki. In the second half Woy Woy threw everything at the home side to increase their lead but simply could not break through. Woy Woy were unable to post any further points in the second stanza. This was mainly due to very good defence by the Kariong team. Kariong defended well and at the same time were able to score 12 points themselves in the final 40 minutes. Kariong were best served by fullback Mitch Clay, and locks Jake Smith and Stanley Mila. Despite the result both teams remain in the Top Four in what is developing into a ‘do or die’ battle for those final four spots in the Finals Series.

Warnervale just got home by 22 points to 20 to defeat Hornsby at Woongarrah Sports Field. In what was probably Hornsby’s best effort of the season, Hornsby could not hang on to a very good lead that they had built up in the first half. Hornsby got away to a wonderful start, and in fact led by 20 points to nil at one stage. Everything looked very good for them then. Warnervale did score a try right on the break to make the halftime score 20 points to 5, but they knew they had a real battle in the second stanza to get back onto the match, and they were able to do this. Warnervale were able to post a further 17 points to nil in the second half to snatch the win. It was a great effort by both teams on the day. Warnervale have had some good wins in recent weeks and will trouble all teams from now on until the end of the season, while Hornsby showed their season is far from over.

Terrigal continued on their winning ways when they comfortably defeated The Lakes  by 59 points to nil at Slade Park. Terrigal were always in control throughout the match. They were able to cross for a total of 9 tries in what proved a most convincing win. Terrigal led by 24 points to nil at halftime, and then scored a further 35 points in the second half of the match. The Lakes had no answer to their attack. Best player for Terrigal was centre Mitch Hirst.

Avoca Beach defeated The Entrance by 29 points to 5 at Heazlett Park in the Presidents Cup competition. In what proved an entertaining clash, the home side were in control for much of the match.

REPORT :

In the Match of the Day Gosford caused a minor surprise when they defeated Woy Woy at Woy Woy Oval by 34 points to 24. In what was a very physical clash, it was hard fought from start to finish.
Gosford got away to the better start and they led on the scoreboard in the first half. Gosford led by 10 points to 7 at the halfway point of the match in what was an evenly fought clash. Both teams gave it their all and there was plenty of feeling in this battle. Every contest was hard fought and no quarter was asked for or given. Gosford continued to lead on the scoreboard in the second half. An intercept try to winger Chris Heap and some good individual play from Hudson Brown saw Gosford post further points in the final 40 minutes. This was enough for Gosford to maintain the lead in the match and to gain the ultimate victory. Best players for Gosford were flanker Hugo Pike and Hudson Brown who were both everywhere in both attack and defence. Others to play well were hooker Vince Stewart and centre Tim Hill. Woy Woy were always in the contest. They regularly got close on the scoreboard but then fell behind. The outstanding player for Woy Woy was centre Wade Hannell who capped off a great game by scoring two tries. Others to put in very credible efforts were Kane Burns, Fokolulu Taumalolo and Brennan Lacey. The win keeps Gosford in the hunt for a semi-final chance while Woy Woy remain in the Top Four but only by the single point. It all makes for an interesting run to the Finals this year with most teams all capable of winning each weekend.

In another upset, Warnervale defeated Avoca Beach by 29 points to 25 at Woongarrah Oval. Warnervale scored a try on fulltime to grab the win. When it seemed Avoca Beach would hold on for a close win, the home side pulled off a miracle and grabbed the win. It is a tremendous boost for the very young northern team. Both teams scored 5 tries but it was Warnervale’s goal kicking that proved the difference. Avoca Beach simply could not kick a goal. Avoca Beach led by 15 points to 12 at the halftime break and at that stage it was obvious the match could go either way. It did prove that way. Warnervale had several good players but their stars were Matt Willmott, Sione Ala, Brendan Jaymz and Folau Faupula. Avoca Beach thought they had the win but it was not to be. Best for the visitors were lock Peter Steele, five-eight Julian Bacigalupo, and winger Luke Wiseman. Avoca Beach did secure two bonus points and those points kept them in the Top Four in what is proving a very tight struggle for semi-final spots this year.

Ourimbah played very effective rugby to maintain their good recent form when they defeated The Lakes by 31 points to 3 at Ourimbah Rugby Park. Ourimbah were in control throughout and did what was necessary to get the bonus point win. Jarrod Grange was excellent for Ourimbah. He crossed for two individual tries, and then was able to kick 3 conversions to contribute 16 personal points. Others to play well for the home side were Rob Peden and Jordan Clark. The Lakes had several very good performers but none were better than halfback Kyle Lanzini and prop Michael Ferry. The win sees Ourimbah cement their 2nd spot on the competition ladder.

Terrigal continued on their undefeated run when they defeated Hornsby at Mark Taylor Oval, running out winners by 79 points to 14. Terrigal were able to race in a total of 13 tries to totally dominate proceedings from the opening to the final whistle. Hornsby started quite well but was simply unable to match the very good play of the visitors. Best players for Terrigal were Sam Kenny, Josh Vainikolo, Dylan Calabria and Nathan Simpson. Hornsby was good in the first half and was only behind by 31 points to 14 at the halftime break. However they were unable to post any further points in the second stanza. Best for Hornsby were Harry Fox and Tevita Alipate.

The Entrance defeated Kariong by 32 points to 7 at Joseph Banks Oval in the Presidents Cup competition.

REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union competition flowed into the second half of this year’s competition with some very exciting matches yesterday. Once again the top of the table was turned all around by the results on the day, with teams falling out of the Top Four and others going in.

The Match of the Day at The Haven Oval saw Terrigal defeat Kariong by 22 points 5. It was a hard fought clash from start to finish with the defence from both sides the feature of the day. However it was Terrigal who always had the edge on the scoreboard and had that little bit of ascendancy throughout. Terrigal did do a lot of attacking but it was the Kariong defence that made things so difficult for them. Terrigal opened the scoring early on with a penalty goal to five-eight Aaron Tait. This 3 nil scoreline remained the situation for quite awhile. The first 20 minutes saw both sides having lengthy periods of attack but neither side was able to break through for a five pointer. Terrigal scored the first try of the match. It resulted from a long break by winger Dan Sargeant who passed to supporting fellow winger Dylan Calabria who crossed for the decisive try. The conversion had placed the home side into a handy 10 points to nil lead. This remained the score at the halftime break. Kariong did have their chances but were simply unable to capitalise. The second half opened up with Kariong on continual attack. They sustained this attack for almost 10 minutes at the start of the half but were unable to post any points. This was the turning point of the match. Terrigal kept them out at this stage and were able to go on and keep control in the match. At the 22nd minute of the second half Terrigal No.8 Josh Vainikolo capped off a good team effort to cross for a converted try to make the score 17 points to 0. Both teams were able to score a try each in the final 10 minutes but the victory had been sealed by Terrigal at that stage. Terrigal had several very good players. Their new halfback, Sekope Maea, was strong and most effective all day. He was very well supported by fullback Alec Herridge, flanker Ryan Metcalfe, hooker Ethan McInnes, and winger Dan Sargeant. It was a very good team effort and the result sees Terrigal maintain their undefeated record this season. Kariong put in the very good effort but just could not bridge the gap on the day. The Kariong team was best served by fullback Mitch Clay, No.8 Phil Brown, and flanker Josh Bottero. Kariong will take a lot from this match and know what they have to do to be able to play in the big games at the end of the season.

Woy Woy were too good for Avoca Beach at Heazlett Park and won by 42 points to 27. Woy Woy got away to a great start and scored their opening points in the opening seconds of the match. They were never headed from that point. Avoca Beach played good rugby and did score four tries, but every time they scored points and got close to Woy Woy, the visiting team was able to slip away with their own points and maintain the lead on the scoreboard. Woy Woy led by 22 points to 13 at the half way point and they were able to maintain that lead for the remainder of the clash. This result really shows the topsy turvy nature of this competition at present with all teams capable of defeating each other on the day. The win sees Woy Woy back into the Top Four in what is developing into a very interesting race to the Finals. Best players for Woy Woy were flanker Alifeleti Atiola, who was everywhere all day, while centre Wade Hannell had one of his best games of the season. Avoca Beach were always very close, but a late try to Woy Woy cemented their victory. Best players for the home side were winger Luke Wiseman, fullback Nathan Brown and forward Peter Steele.

Gosford returned to the winner’s list with a pleasing win over The Lakes at Slade Park. Gosford were able to score 5 tries to 2 and that fact alone was a good indication of the flow of the match. The first half was a relatively even struggle with the halftime score only being Gosford 12, The Lakes 7 so the match result was still very much up for grabs at that point. However the second half saw Gosford play the better rugby and they were able to outlast the home side by 22 points to 7 in the second stanza. Gosford had several very good players but none were better than Josh McGlynn who was always dangerous with the ball in hand, and as a result was able to cross for 2 tries. Another to play well was hooker Vince Stewart who was also rewarded with a try. The Lakes were always in there with a chance early on but could not sustain the pressure. Best players for The Lakes were No.8 Glenn Stone and prop Jordan Thompson.

Ourimbah continued their good recent form when they defeated Hornsby at Mark Taylor Oval to the tune of 57 points to 3. Ourimbah were always in charge after an initial onslaught from Hornsby. The home side did open the scoring with a penalty goal for a 3 points to nil lead but from that point it was all Ourimbah. Ourimbah was able to cross for 9 tries to cement their position in the Top Four. Hornsby never gave up and were committed for the entire match. Best players for Ourimbah were Jordan Clark, Brett Cunningham and Matt King, while Hornsby were best served by lock Ed Mills and five-eight Sam White.

In President’s Cup at Joseph Banks Oval, The Entrance and Warnervale played out a hard fought 29 all draw.

REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union competition has reached the halfway point of the season. It is certainly developing into a very interesting second half of the season with the struggle for Semi-final spots now being hotly contested. After the washout from the previous Saturday, Round 9 went ahead on Saturday with some very interesting results.

The Match of the Day at Woy Woy Oval saw Ourimbah defeat Woy Woy by 32 points to 22. In a hard fought clash it was Ourimbah who came out on top. There was not too much between the two teams for much of the match but it was the visitors who were in front on the scoreboard for almost the entire game. Ourimbah got away to a very good start and in the first 40 minutes took control. They went to the halftime break leading by 20 points to 10. The second half was a far more even affair but it was Ourimbah who maintained that 10 point lead. Best players for Ourimbah were prop Brett Cunningham, lock Steven Pike and flanker Jarrod Grange. Grange had a most effective match, totalling 17 personal points through his goal kicking. Both teams scored three tries but it was the goal kicking of Jarrod Grange that was the difference on the day. Woy Woy attacked towards the end and had their chances but Ourimbah held on for the win. Best players for Woy Woy were flanker Lapana Vitale and No.8 Chris Paseka who both crossed for a try each. The win sees Woy Woy drop out of the Top Four and Ourimbah jump in, in what is proving an interesting tussle for semi-final spots at the midway point of the season.

Kariong continued their great form with a pleasing win over Gosford by 33 points to 20 at Kariong Oval. Kariong totally dominated the first half and were on continual attack. Gosford simply could not break out of their own territory. The Kariong defence was a feature of their victory. This dominance on the paddock by Kariong saw them go to a 13 points to nil lead at the halftime break, and then early in the second half were able to double that scoreline. Kariong led by 26 points to nil and the match was all but over even at that stage. To Gosford’s great credit they did fight back in the last quarter of the match. In fact they crossed for four very good tries, but it was all too late. Kariong sealed the win with a late converted try. Kariong are now in second spot on the competition ladder and their success this year so far has been one of the main talking points of the year. Best players for Kariong were Brent Bovis, who crossed for two tries, prop Cory Holwill, and back Mitch Clay. Others to play well were No.8 Phil Brown, hooker Justin Walker, and flanker Josh Bottero. Several players from Gosford put in very good efforts. These included winger Chris Heap, who scored two tries, winger Adam Howe, and hooker Vince Stewart. The win sees Kariong travelling along very well and will be most keen to maintain that form for the second half of the season. Gosford will need to record some big wins from now on if they are to make the Top Four. The win also sees Kariong hold on to the Challenge Shield.

The other two matches saw very big wins. Terrigal defeated Warnervale at The Haven Oval by 50 points to 7, while Avoca Beach piled on the points to defeat Hornsby by 67 points to 5 at Heazlett Park. However both losing sides put in very good efforts early on and forced the two home teams to fight for the victory. But later in both matches the home team took control on the scoreboard and recorded very comfortable victories.

Terrigal led by 22 points to 7 at the halftime break so at that stage the match was still quite even. However Terrigal were able to go on and score a total of 7 tries to one. Best players for Terrigal were five eight Alec Herridge, hooker Ethan McInnes, and lock Phil Heard. However it was an excellent team effort and the result sees Terrigal being the only undefeated team in the competition at the halfway point of the season. Best for Warnervale were centre Francis Sui, halfback Brenton Acreman, and five-eight Sione Ala.

Avoca Beach crossed for a total of 11 tries in their win over Hornsby. They dominated from the start to the finish and they led by 28 points to 5 at the halftime break. Avoca Beach were best served by prop Luke Sheridan, fullback Nathan Brown and centre Matt Anderson. Hornsby never gave up and were best served by Tim Graham-Robertson and Sam White. The win by Avoca Beach sees them back on the winners list after a couple of losses, and cements their position in the Top Four at the midway point of the season.

In President’s Cup at Joseph Banks Oval, The Lakes defeated  The Entrance by 22 points to 12. The match, played under lights last Friday week, was contested in wintery conditions but once again in front of a pleasing crowd.
