REPORT :
The 2023 Central Coast Rugby Union season continued with some excellent games of rugby. Despite the overcast conditions, the rugby was free flowing and all matches were well attended,
The Match of the Day at Ourimbah Rugby Park saw the Razorbacks win by 27 points to 7 over The Lakes. The first half was a real arm wrestle with both teams giving their all. The Razorbacks opened the scoring with an early try to No.8 Rob Peden. They were able to increase this score line a little with a penalty goal to take a narrow but handy early lead of 8 points to nil. The first half however was tight. The Lakes responded close to halftime with their own converted try to make the halftime score Razorbacks 8 The Lakes 7. This one point lead was indicative of the flow of the first half. There was absolutely nothing in it, and the victory was certainly up for grabs at the halftime break. The Lakes took the lead early in the second half when they kicked an early penalty goal to lead by 10 points to 8. This remained the score for quite awhile. However the further the match went on it was the home team that took control on the scoreboard. They were able to cross for three tries in the last quarter of the match to secure the win. It was a tough and hard fought match. The Razorbacks will take the win but The Lakes will also take a lot from the contest. Best players for the Razorbacks were hooker Jade Strongman, flanker Lachlan Peruch and lock Steve Finley. The Lakes were best served by props Glen Simpson and Ben Kaifa, halfback Bryce Lace, and No.8 Ashton Hutchinson-Walters. The win sees the Razorbacks go to the top of the competition ladder.
Avoca Beach scored a victory over Hornsby at Heazlett Park, running out winners by 37 points to 7. The first half was an even struggle with both teams giving their all. Both teams had further opportunities to post points but good defence kept the match to a low scoring one for the first 40 minutes. Avoca Beach took the early lead through two tries and the lead of 12 points to nil was a promising one. Hornsby did respond later in the first half to make the halftime score 15 points to 7. Avoca Beach had kicked a penalty goal right on the halftime whistle. The second half was controlled by the home side. Avoca Beach took control both on the paddock and on the scoreboard. They were able to post a further 22 points in the second half to lock in a pleasing win. Hornsby tried everything to get back into the match but could not cross the line for any further points. Best players for Avoca Beach were flanker Blake Jacob, centre Alex Halls, fullback Kye Bonnici and five-eight Sam Evans. Best performers for Hornsby were halfback Ben Astley, and props Angus MacQueen and Russell Yates.
Terrigal had a great start to the season when they defeated Lake Macquarie at The Haven Oval by 101 points to 5. It was one way traffic for the entire 80 minutes. Lake Macquarie had no answer to the onslaught. Terrigal crossed for 15 tries in the match and this fact alone shows the obvious flow of the contest. Five-eight Adam Danckert was able to post an individual score of 31 points, while Jayden Woolley crossed for 4 individual tries. Lake Macquarie had no answer but were best served by lock Jarod Scott and fullback Franco Quinones. Terrigal’s best players were flanker Sam Kenny, lock Jacob Moorhouse and fullback Jayden Woolley.
Warnervale recorded a good but narrow victory over Woy Woy at Woongarrah Oval, running out victors by 10 points to 5. This was a physical, hard battle from start to finish. There was absolutely nothing in this match. Warnervale led by 5 points to nil at halftime, so it was obviously anyone’s match at the break. Warnervale scored a try in each half. It was obvious the defence from both teams was outstanding. Woy Woy did cross for a try right on fulltime but it was all too late for them. It was a vital win for Warnervale but the match did show that both teams will be competitive this season and will cause problems for all oppositions this year. Best players for the home team were five-eight Isaiah Niumata, hooker Kye Haslem and flanker Enosi Falekaono, while for Woy Woy, No.8 Tane Lilo, flanker Bruce Folua and fullback Paea Fatuainga Nau were their best contributors.
The Women’s 10’s matches continue to show a great standard. Wins were recorded by the Razorbacks, who defeated The Lakes in a close one, Avoca Beach, and Warnervale, who struggled to overcome an improving Woy Woy team.
