REPORT :
The 2023 Central Coast Rugby Union season continued with some excellent games of rugby. There were two very tight contests, while the other two fixtures saw one sided results.

The Match of the Day at Ourimbah Rugby Park saw Terrigal account for the Razorbacks by 35 points to nil. In a match many thought would be so close from start to finish, Terrigal were able to dominate from the opening whistle. Terrigal got away to a great start with an early try and then were able to post consistent points throughout the remainder of the first half. It was a strong performance and maybe ranks them as Premiership favourites at this early stage of the season. Terrigal had jumped to a match winning lead of 32 points to nil at halftime. Best players for Terrigal were No.8 Salipopo Pamata, lock Macklin Collins and centre Tim Grant. But it was a very good all-round performance by all members of the visitor’s squad. A serious injury early in the second half disrupted proceedings and only a penalty goal was kicked after that. Best performers for the Razorbacks were prop Mackenzie Zammit, five-eight Daniel Jones and lock Steve Finley.

Hornsby scored a very close victory over The Lakes at Mark Taylor Oval, running out winners by the narrow margin of 14 points to 12. The first half was an even struggle with both teams giving their all. Both teams had further opportunities to post points but good defence kept the match to a low scoring one for the much of the contest. The two teams were locked at 7 points apiece at the halftime break so it was anybody’s game at that time. Play continued to be tight but Hornsby were able to hang on for their first win of the season. Both teams crossed for 2 tries each and that fact alone showed the closeness of the match. The Lakes had their chances late in the match but very good Hornsby defence kept them out. Best players for Hornsby were prop Angus McQueen, hooker Jackson Cole and winger Jack O’Connor, while for The Lakes the best efforts were put in by prop Luke Clarkson, five-eight Brayden Hutchinson-Walters and lock Harry Pirini. The Lakes have been so close in all their matches this year but are still looking for that first victory.

Avoca Beach continued their great start to the season when they defeated Lake Macquarie at Heazlett Park by 85 points to 10. It was a very good performance which saw Lake Macquarie having few answers to the onslaught. Avoca Beach crossed for 13 tries while Lake Macquarie were only able to respond with the single 5 pointer. It has been a tough couple of weeks for the Lake Macquarie club and they will be looking forward to a home game in the next few weeks. Best players for Avoca Beach were winger Mitchell Briggs, who crossed for 4 individual tries, centre Michael Houssenloge, flanker Fionn Henderson-Foley and prop Matt Ritchie. Barcelona Lupematasila was the best player for the visitors and he crossed for their lone try.

Gosford recorded a narrow victory over Woy Woy at Gosford Showground, running out victors by 25 points to 24. This was a physical, hard battle from start to finish. There was absolutely nothing in this match. Woy Woy led by 14 points to 8 at halftime, so it was obviously anyone’s fixture at that stage. Woy Woy jumped away to a handy lead at the midway point of the second half. When they led 21 -8, things were looking good for them. However, Gosford were able to keep in the match and after taking the lead 22-21, the match developed into a real and continuing arm wrestle. A penalty goal on the fulltime whistle saw Gosford take the win at the last moment. Best players for Gosford were hooker Joel Wagner, halfback Ben Shelley and flanker Richard Cully. Woy Woy were best served by halfback Siaosi Finau, hooker Soane Lakalaka, and No.8 Sonatane Lilo.

There were some exciting games in Women’s 10’s matches this weekend. Wins were recorded by Terrigal, The Lakes, and Warnervale.
