REPORT :
The 2023 Central Coast Rugby Union season continued with Round 7 action across the Central Coast. The season continues to build with several teams now jostling for those Final Five placings at the end of the year. All matches were played in cool but fine weather conditions.
The Match of the Day at Woongarrah Oval saw Avoca Beach and Warnervale play out a thrilling match but it was Avoca Beach who came out victors by 31 points to 19. Warnervale got away to the better start and opened the scoring early on with a converted try. It was developing into a battle royal with both teams giving their all. Avoca Beach was able to reduce the gap by kicking two penalty goals, and then took the lead by 11 points to 7 after they scored their first try. It was proving an exciting and tight game of rugby. Warnervale took the lead once again just prior to halftime when they crossed for their second converted try to go to the break leading by 14 points to 11. Avoca Beach squared the match early in the second half when they made the score 14 all after kicking a penalty goal. A fourth penalty to the visitors saw them take the lead and they led by 17 points to 14. The contest remained close for much of the remainder of the match however it was Avoca Beach who finished a little stronger. They were able to score 2 tries to Warnervale’s one to grab the victory. Both teams will take so much from the match but it is Avoca Beach who remain undefeated this season. Best players for Avoca Beach were No.8 Matt Anderson, Tom Murphy and flanker Fionn Henderson-Foley, who posted 21 individual points. Best for Warnervale were hooker Kye Haslam, prop Veipueki Siale, who crossed for 2 tries, and fullback Alfred Brown.
Terrigal met Gosford at The Haven Oval but it was Terrigal who secured the victory by 41 points to 7. Terrigal got away to the better start with an early penalty goal and an early try. This 8 nil lead set the pattern for much of the match. Terrigal were relentless and continued to control proceedings both on the paddock and on the scoreboard. Terrigal maintained the rage and went to the halftime break leading by 34 points to nil. Things at that stage looked ominous for Gosford and so it proved to be. The second half was a far more even battle but the first half performance by Terrigal secured the win on the day. In fact, the second half was locked at 7 points apiece but it was all too late for Gosford. Terrigal maintain their unbeaten record this season while Gosford will need to regroup so they can return to the winner’s circle. Best players for Terrigal were centre Jayden Woolley, who crossed for 2 tries, five-eight Adam Danckert, who posted 16 personal points, and Edward Bookallil. Gosford were best served by lock Taylor Mildren, five-eight Josh McGlynn and hooker Joel Wagner.
The match at Woy Woy Oval saw The Lakes get their first win of the season with a tight victory over Woy Woy by 39 points to 27. This match went neck and neck for much of the 80 minutes. It proved to be a great game of rugby. Woy Woy took the early lead with a try but it was not long before The Lakes grabbed the lead. The match was like that throughout, with the lead changing on numerous occasions. The Lakes went to the halftime break leading by 19 points to 10 but the match was still very much up for grabs. The Lakes scored 6 tries to Woy Woy’s 5 so this fact alone showed the closeness of the contest. It was anybody’s match for much of the time. At the midway stage of the second half, The Lakes led by the narrow margin of 26 points to 22 but they were able to finish the stronger to go on to record a pleasing victory. A feature of the match were the three tries scored by centre Sione Vaenuku. Other good players for The Lakes were lock Paul Wilson, prop Connor Starkey, and winger Josua Camaasalia. Best for the home team were lock Fe’iloakitohi Patrick Tautua’a, who crossed for 2 tries, and flankers Bruce Folau and Casey Woodford.
Hornsby travelled to Boolaroo to meet Lake Macquarie and the match proved to be a one sided contest, with Hornsby running out winners by 87 points to nil. It was one way traffic for most of the match but both teams tried their very best and put on a display of very open, running rugby. Lake Macquarie gave it their all but had no answer to the continuous Hornsby attack. It was one of Hornsby’s best performances this year and will be a huge boost to their season going forward. They crossed for 13 tries, with Nick Anderson posting a personal tally of 4 tries. Hornsby led by 45 points to nil at the halftime break so the match was cemented even at that stage. Hornsby went on and posted a further 42 points in the second stanza. Best players for Hornsby were centre Nick Anderson, hooker Jackson Cole and No.8 Hamish Perring. Lake Macquarie were best served by centre Wayne Gorman and flanker Jarod Scott.
There were some exciting games in Women’s 10’s matches this weekend. There were three matches on display. Avoca Beach, Hornsby and The Lakes all recorded vital wins in what is developing into an interesting race to the Finals later in the year. The match at Boolaroo between the Razorbacks and Hornsby was a beauty with some great rugby on display but it was Hornsby who secured the vital win.
